Default HELP PLEASE!! mysterious breakdown....

I searched rather thoroughly but could not find anything close enough to be of much use, could somebody please help? so....

co-owner/driver of our 2004 F-150 just called me up not long ago, on the way back from a fishing trip, truck just shut herself down suddenly. she did make multiple attempts to start back up, but sputtered. however when given gas, she once again shut back off suddenly. this went on over a period of a couple hours before he gave up and called in a taxi.

if any or all of it helps, she is an 04 XL 4.6 auto 2wd with 84K miles, mechanically stock but for a fabricated replacement driveshaft. this happened on a long stretch of road with a medium speed limit, that goes into town from a rural farming area. truck is a clean, always well cared for DD work truck that has been all but completely problem-free up to tonight. having had the fortune to not once have a truck do anything at all similar in memory, this is very new and confusing. if anyone has some insight, I'd be very, very grateful.

My first thought would be the Fuel Pump Driver Module. This is located over top of the spare tire on a crossmember rail. They are made of partial aluminum and lay on a steel frame piece, as you can imagine, the dissimilar metals corrode each other like crazy. Our 11th-Generation F-150's are notorious for this issue.

If yours has cracked or gotten a hole in it like many have experienced, any foreign matter and especially water will get in there and short out the computer board that it encompasses.

There are several good write-ups on this, so a search will render some good results. Based on your symptoms, it may be this, so it is worth checking into.

I would start there too! I have a code for that but it doesn't set the check engine light off. The cover on mine is cracked off and I need to replace mine as well. I haven't had any issues knock on wood other than one time it cranked a few more times that usual but that's defiantly not a bad place to start.

heard that elsewhere I asked tonight and looked it up, thanks man. have to look into that tomorrow, she had to be left where she was for the night. kinda hoping it is this and not something worse as cannot really afford the fix as it is, and she can't be down any longer than needed.

thanks for the help very much.

On my old truck before my pickup, I experienced the same issue. The truck started out with a surge while driving and a odd idle..it got worse over a week. Then all of a sudden it did what your vehicle did, would not start nor stay running when giving it gas...turned out to be a throttle position sensor and idle air control valve that caused a good day headache as no check engine light came on...just some helpful info to look into

Wow, 28K posts in 2 years and you have never heard of the FPDM going bad due to corrosion? I cleaned mine up and spaced it away from the frame, not due to issues, but due to seeing how many threads there were on this going bad and how to cure it. Sure hope that is what it is, cheap fix for sure.

I've heard of it a little, but not enough to stick in mind. I gather it's mainly an 11th gen issue, I'm not around the 11th gen section enough I guess...

but thanks, spacing it away is a good idea for sure. I hope its the issue too....
