Default 2005 ignition key

I need to get a second key for my 05 F150. According to dealer it must be programmed. Is this correct or is the dealer just looking to charge $ 76. for key.
thanks

It does have to be programmed that is correct. They want $76 for the key plus programming or is that included?

you wouldn't happen to know if that's "all 04-08 f150s" would you? I'm wondering if I can just go and have another key made.

you have to have it programmed. You can use a non programmed key just to unlock your door. But a programmed one has to be used or it won't start.

Some Ace Hardware stores can program a new key without connecting to your truck's diagnostic port. They put the key into a machine and read and copy the code. Then they put the new key into the machine and transfer the code to the new key. It takes about five minutes. I had this done and it worked like a charm and I think the price was about $75 or so and a lot easier than going to a dealer. I have done both.

I had an independent locksmith make an extra key for my truck. It does need to be programmed but not only at a dealer.

my key looks like a regular key. Black oval like share with a ford on it then the key shaft. Are they all like that? It just doesn't seem special in any way.

The other option is to take your RFID key, have regular copies made. Secure your RFID key in your steering column so that your truck will always read that key (has to be really close to the ignition) and then you can use regular keys all the time. This also means that anyone can bump key your tumblers and have a running truck. Although, they would have to know that you have the key stowed in your column first, cause, who would do that?

You key should also have a S written on it which designates the encryption level of the PATS. If you have a remote starter that works, I do mention to people that on ours it does count as a key (as long as it's not cloned). It's not easy but you can use the remote start as a second key (with a blank key) to program a new one. It's probably easier for the time and trouble to just have the dealer do it.

If you do have a remote starter... mention it to the dealer or they might not program it. If they don't, you can do it quite easily with the two keys you have.
