I want to do a black out on the housing itself. An old trick is you bake them so the glue becomes soft, then you can pull it apart. Paint the housing then put it back together. Has anybody ever tried this before on our headlights?

I just took a set apart yesterday for a little retrofit I'm working on and it is possible and has been done many times. I ran into alot of resistance from the light and it didn't want to come apart since they are very well sealed. You may want to put them in at 250* for about 15 minutes (checking periodically to make sure that you smell nothing burning) and then pull them out and work them apart a little and then put them back in for another 7-10 minutes. Repeat this a few times until they come apart without too much coersion on your part so as to not damage the housing.

Also make sure that you pull off the rubber sealing ring around the headlight bulb port since it is really soft and will easily melt in the oven. It will come right off if you just pull it.

I used aluminum foil on a cookie sheet. I feared putting paper in the oven... wet or not.

Work form the more drastic angle side (sharpest point) 1st and be patient. Dont get in a hurry and damage the heads...it will work.
