Read the comments in the post from the other day pertaining to straightpipes.

Removing your cats can lead to a hugh Federal fine. Not worth it. At the very least, if you must have loud, install performance cats and stay legal, with money in your pocket.

Im not trying to start an argument here or anything, but where I live I dont think that any truck that has been lifted or anything done to it has cats. Plus Michigan doesnt have emissions testing thank god. Around my area cops dont really care and when i used to have my old truck (it was a chevy) It didnt have any cats or mufflers and i got pulled over twice and all they said was dont hammer on the gas so it so loud . I guess it kind of all depends on where you live or if it is going to be annoying to people around you. I guess it all depends on how the cops are around your area and if you have testing for that stuff.

If you want to get really technical, in most states it's illegal to modify the exhaust in any manner which would increase noise level. This is straight from Washington's RCW;

No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the engine of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle not equipped as required by this subsection, or which has been amplified as prohibited by this subsection. A court may dismiss an infraction notice for a violation of this subsection if there is reasonable grounds to believe that the vehicle was not operated in violation of this subsection.

If your area doesn't perform emissions testing, chances are if you get stopped for whatever reason, the officer isn't going to climb under your vehicle and check for cats. If you want loud, removing your cats is a good first step. You might get hassled for it, you might not. It really depends on where you live.

If you're looking for performance, I would suggest going with headers and a true dual system. I know lot of people have been happy with Magnaflow and personally, I think they have the best sound as well.

well if you run 100% straight pipes, your truck will be more of a turd than it already is. if you want performance, spend the money, do a programmer, high flow cats, headers, and good flowing mufflers. otherwise you'll just have an obnoxiously loud and even slower truck.

if you live in cali, you are probably going to get a lot of hassle, i live in az and their are no emissions requirements where i live except if you live in the phx metro area last time i checked. you cant necessarily get rid of the cats/o2 sensors but you can get a custom tune with a diablo, sniper, or sct tuner, i dont know if you can do that with a superchips tuner. you disable the rear o2 sensors and you can run an off road y pipe (straight...)i have custom tunes on both my cobra and mustang and neither one has cats on it =)
if you remove your cats w/o a tune it will run like a "turd" if you get the custom tune it will better than with stock or "hi flow" cats, i think they are a waste based on my personal testing with a flow meter. if you havent changed out your muffler just wait till after you cut them out so you know what type of muffler to get based on how much more sound you want.
