Question Front Chrome Wheels question...

i have a 2008 Ford F150 Supercrew, and i have the chrome package with the chrome wheels, bumper and side step bars. i have noticed that i have what looks like brake dust residue on my front wheels, and i have bought the spray wheel cleaner and soaked them and scrubbed them with the sponge/ cleaning glove and i cannot get this residue off. ive had the truck for 6 mons, and the rims dont look as shiny as they were when i first bought it. any suggestions or ideas to remove this residue would be greatly appreciated! thaanks!
Nick from Georgia.

Just from my experience when I detailed cars...

MOST spray wheel cleaners are rather harsh when it comes to a chrome wheel. There are special cleaners made for chrome finishes. If you let the normal sprays sit on there it will actually dull your finish.

I would recomend trying to polish them to get them back to the way they were new.

EDIT- I personally would just use soap and water from now on (if you dont want to buy the chrome wheel cleaner) as long as you don't get tire shine on the wheels and then it dusts over. Tire shine is rather tough to get off with just soap and water.

Just asking here....

I have the 2008 F15 Screw Lariet. It has the chrome package as well. I have the same problem as you are describing. What I have found is that the wheels are not really chrome in my case. They are some sort of material (plastic?) that looks like chrome, cover the entire wheel and are clipped/mounted onto an aluminum wheel.

I call this the modern day hub cab.

Feel with your fingers the back side of any given spoke. These clip ons have a gap between the actual metal and the chrome clip on...

If you have the same wheel I do...good luck at getting thsi stuff off. A real chrome wheel would come clean effortlessly. Because the brake dust is hot, I am betting it is deeply embedding into the plastic (I dont know what else to call it).

I am to the point that I am looking into new OEM wheels for my Screw.

Let's see, post up pics of the wheels. Ford actually did a steel wheel with a chrome cover over it but as far as I know, it only came on the XL's.

I suggest after you can get em cleaned up and free from all dust, etc., put a nice coat of wax/polish on em. I am getting excessive brake dust on my FX2 and cleaned up my wheels and put some wax on them and the brake dust comes right off! I would say this is something you would probally have to keep up on and keep those wheels clean...
