front axle ?
thanks for the input was guess i'll just have to buy a locker then hey any suggestions which one first front or rear in know it has an ls in rear was thinking of true trac on front but what has everybody heard for the best locker in front as i am a fan of the detroit in rear even with the noise they make
You'll get alot of conflicting input on this.
I have a Truetrac in the rear of my F150, and love it. Best all-around set-up for street and moderate off-roading, and terrific in snow.
BUT I have a detroit locker in the rear and detroit truetrac in the front of my 1996 F350, and that's awesome. I disagree with almost everyone that says you can't run a Detroit locker in the rear on the street. I've been doing it for years with no bad results, or unexplained tire wear. Once in a great while I'll feel it unlock going around a turn, but the new ones are called "soft lockers". You can tell by the letters "LS" in the model number of the locker. You don't get the banging all the time like the old ones.
The front is a different story though. The only time I'd recommend a detroit locker in the front is if you ONLY use the truck for off-road. (since our trucks disengage at the hubs, when you're in 2wd, it makes no difference what differential you have when in 2wd because its not turning).
I would recommend a Truetrac all the way. It's the closest thing to a locker without actually having a locker, and they work great in the front. If you insist on a locker in the front though, and you do run 4wd on the road from time to time, go with a selectable locker, like the eaton E-locker, that locks only when you need it.
Honestly though, the best all around combination for what 99% of all truck owners use their trucks for is front and rear TRUETRACS.

i've heard of the soft lockers hadn't heard anything about them but the less noise would be nice are they as stong as they origanals the e-locker would be nice i'll have to see if i can get a price through work on one thanks for the input
Does anyone know if the 1992 came standard with LS in the front? I know mine is open diff rear, 3.55 gears. It makes a clunking noise in tight corners when the hubs are locked and in 2 wheel drive. I'll find out tomorrow when i lift 'er up and try spinning the tires by hand... just curious for now.
all fronts are reverse cut 8.8 28 splines, rears can be either a 8.8 31 spline or a 9.75, you have to check your axle code for that.
edit: thats the standard f150's, don't have any research on the "hd" versions

The Heavy Duty (7-lug) Sterling 10.25 rear axles are 35 splines and semi-floating. Front end is still the 8.8 28spline though.
