Default Finally Got around to Installing Tailgate Reverse Camera

Giving Credit where it is do I got the idea from another member: Mattrourke
https://www.f150forum.com/f4/afterma...handle-163504/

This is the Camera
https://www.f150forum.com/f4/afterma...handle-163504/

I didn't get it all wired because as my luck would have it today started nice and warm and sunny and by the time I got the tailgate handle done it was cold and pouring rain. So I backed the truck up to the car port and put the tailgate back together and saved the wiring for another day.

Measured out

Pilot Hole Drilled

Hole Cut

Installed

In the Tailgate

So far so good!
I bought that same camera from that thread and haven't gotten around to doing it yet either. It's definitely something I want to get done before winter hits. Thanks for reminder...

Are you tapping off the 7 pin trailer harness or the kick panel connector for your reverse trigger wire?

I found this quote on another forum so first I am going to investigate the Dark Green/yellow wire in the radio harness first. Power and ground I am gonna get from the trailer harness under the tailgate. My question for you is where were you planning on bringing the video wire into the cab?

Pin 6 is listed as "not" used but my 2008 F150 has a Dark Green wire with a yellow stripe. When the truck is put in reverse, this wire registers 12v

Good question!
I'm probably gonna bring it up through the door sill floor plate. When you pull the door sill cover off, it snaps into grommeted holes that go through the floor, you can see the ground through them. I was planning on using black RTV silicone around it for a tight seal. Then run it through the kick plate, to the dash, then to the deck...
I'm probably going to run the reverse trigger wire back to the 7 pin harness with the video wire in tandem. I'm planning on soldering, shrink and dip ping everything. I don't feel comfortable soldering at that kick panel connector. I don't trust those quick splice connectors either.

So you are going to run the reverse trigger from the radio all the way to the rear of the truck? Surely there is a wire in the dash harness that is 12vt in reverse.... My suggestion for the power and ground at the 7 pin is to cut the hot and gnd wire and run everything to a connector like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kit-2-Pins-W...f99107&vxp=mtr

I like that! I was wondering what I was gonna do if I had to remove the tailgate. The connector supplied with the camera is not the type that I would feel comfortable unplugging repeatedly.

I know it's clearly inefficient to run a reverse trigger all the way back, but I'm not keen on messing with that bulk connector in the kick panel... I feel more comfortable running a dedicated wire, and keeping all my connections in one location... I've thought it over quite a bit, and since the video wire has to run that way regardless, then I might as well bring the reverse trigger along for the run.... I also need to be careful because with an edge CS, remote start, alarm, and sound system, I've already got a lot going on in that area... If I could slide the trigger wire into the back of the socket of the bulk connector, then I might reconsider.. It's something I will definitely look into when the time comes.

So I didn't follow my own advice to you. I ordered those Water proof connectors and was expecting them yesterday or Friday but they are coming from China so that didn't happen. I was at the autostore and saw waterproof wiretaps, which I didn't know existed or were even possible. So I used them.

I covered the audio wire with conduit all the way from front to back.

Oh, and I accidentally discovered that this camera does not require the ground wire to be grounded in order to work.

I still didnt tap into reverse for the camera trigger. I interrogated the wires in the radio harness and no luck there. Im not sure what color wires I am looking for at the fuse panel. right now I just have two gator clamps hooked to a keyed on source handing out of my radio bezel.its rigged for now but at least I can connect them together and get cam if I feel i really need it.

I finally got around to tapping into the reverse trigger today. I just used a wire tap to hook into the blaCk/pink wire at the floor underneath the driver door sill plate. I also decided to relocate the cam to the bumper because at the tailgate handle i could not see the receiver or any part of the truck so although I could see whats behind me, i could not see how close my bumper was to objects. I put it in the plastic around the license plate. Now you can see the bumper and the receiver.

I will have to either get a plug for the tailgate handle or replace it now but no biggie.

Anyone want to trade for a tailgate handle already modded to receive a 19mm camera?
