Default Factory Sub

I just recently bought an 06 Screw lariat and my boss just bought a king ranch. His came with the factory sub and it sours great. Has anyone installed the factory sub? It don't seem like his has an extra amp powering it or anything. Any info on the addition would be greatly appreciated

Its part of Ford’s " audiophile" system. It is a powered sub. On the stock radio, the audiophile head unit has an extra out for the cable that hooks up to the sub/amp enclosure. There is a good write up on here about it and how to identify if your radio has the necessary output to run the sub. Just search "audiophile head unit".

How about a small aside. I have the audiophile system. It does sound very good for a factory set up. However, I'm looking to install an amp from a previous car. It's a kicker 700.5 (if I remember right). Anyone know of an aftermarket sub that fits the factory box and operates in the airspace within? I've been told it's an 8" sub from the factory.

Have you actually looked at the factory subwoofer? A powered sub, as far as I know, doesn't really have a box. It's just a mediocre subwoofer with a plastic enclosure and a small amp, isn't it? If so, you'll be hard pressed to put a different sub in that enclosure and it would be a waste of your time.

Whether or not it is possible to utilize the current enclosure, you would be much better off selling the factory setup and redoing your whole system. Two 10" JL subs under the back seat of your pickup will make that powered sub sound like a toy drum.

I think what he was saying is that it is powered by an external amp (outside of the head unit), which the factory audiophile is. Def agree that 2 JL 10’s will make the factory sub sound like toy drums. But it’s a decent option if you have a factory head unit (with the necessary plug for the sub harness). I have no idea how much they cost, but I guarantee they are cheaper than a JL stealth box. I have the factory sub, but replaced all of my door speakers with low power Boston Acoustics speakers. Sounds really good and since I am not 16 nor do I "bump" rap at stop lights with my windows down, its plenty bass for me. I’m staying with a stock look since a head unit would get stolen within a week in Dallas.

Well I'm just trying to beef up what's in there so it could accommodate the extra power of the Kicker amp. You're right that it is powered but the factory amp sits out side the factory box. I'm specifically trying to avoid a two sub box or any aftermarket box since they will not maintain the factory look or match the carpet etc etc. The box as far as I can tel is actually a sub box. I can post pics if necessary. What I don't know is the air space within that box.

Again agreed. I don't need to "bump" or listen to my music 100 yards away lol. I just want a little more. Which is another reason why I don't have interest in replacing the factory box only what's in it.

Plus the factory sub has some miles on it and used to clip on the factory head unit. After I switched to a Kenwood DVD unit the clipping has stopped but still.

If I was you I would pull the factory sub out and measure the mounting depth. Then you can go find a sub that will fit. Kicker and a few others make a shallow fit sub. I’m sure one kicker 8 with a good amount of power would sound pretty clean out of a box that size. As far as internal space goes, you can just take external measurements and calculate it that way. I know there are a lot of odd shapes in the box, but you can probably get close enough.

Yes sir, looks like that's the way it's headed. I had just assumed someone had already undertaken the task lol. But I guess doing it first has it's own prestige lol. When it's done I'll post the install up here.
