Default Extra Key?

We just purchased a used 2004 F-150 Lariat and the owner only had one key. Is there any way to get another key made that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I don't care about a remote - just a key to unlock and start. Thanks

From what I've read/heard if you only have one key the 2nd has to be bought at the dealership as they are chipped keys. The remote is the cheap/easy part. Don't buy them from the dealer. The 2nd key on the other hand is a pain...at least from what I know.

$50 for a chipped key at Walmart. Just head to the automotive section and ask about chipped keys. You may have to go to a couple of Walmarts to find one that has your key in stock, I had to go to three before I found one.

Maybe I got screwed but after being in the same situation and doing my own research, I concluded that I HAD to go to Ford to get a second key made because they had to access the PATS system in order to make it work. It cost me $70 to get a second key but in my mind was well worth it considering the cost of re-keying the entire truck should I lose my one and only.

Add this to the list of things I would have loved to know before buying my 04...

This is the same thing I read but really only applies to the 2nd key. If you have 2 getting others is easy. Kind of like programming the 2nd FOB/remote.

The 2nd key on our '13 is not chipped. You should be able to go to your local hardware store and get a key made. On ours, you do have to start the vehicle (or turn to "on" position) after opening the door with the key, or the perimeter alarm will go off. Other than that, no issues.

I was told by my ford dealer that a second key for my 04 would cost >$100.. but you can get a non-chip key for much cheaper (it just won't work in the ignition is my understanding)..

they also quoted me like $60 to "find" the door code since I don't have the owner's manual..

You just have to determine if $60 is worth the 30 minutes or so for you to take out the back of the back seat to get the code. I did it myself rather than pay some dude $60 to plug in a computer for 5 min. its up to you though

That video will show you where it is. Call around to a few dealerships first. I was quoted up to $100 to obtain the code, but the fourth place I called did it for free. Of course they then quoted me $250 to swap out my shift ****, but still lol.
