I have the 5.4 in my 2004, also. Right after I purchased it in February it went right to my mechanic to have him look it over (it was still on dealer warrantee). I mentioned it to him and he said it's nothing to worry about. It's actually coming from the front passenger side...they all do that.

I too have an '04 5.4L SCREW; I bought the truck with 32K and it did have a click or clack on the passenger side of the engine. I had read that this noise was not uncommon with this year/engine, which seems like an odd thing to me. At 101K the #1 cylinder lost all compression. As best as I can tell, somehow one of the valves dropped down and the rising piston hit it, knocking the valve up which knocked off the rocker/valve spring. Was this the source of the knocking noise, and it finally gave out? However the new engine I have installed does not have this noise.

mines doing the same thing. Everyone asks me if its a diesel!! My dealership said there was a bulletin about bad lifters in the motors. But they dont do warrenty work untill its actually busted, not just for noise. So he said beat the shiit outta it till it breaks then they can fix it. But for shiiits i did a oil change and did 5 10w40's in and 2 20w50s in to thickin it up and it damn near took the sound completly away. So crap it ill run that oil from now on.

Something is definitely not right! Sounds like you have rocks inside your engine.
