It does not come on if you turn the key to run but not to start? How did you become aware that it is not working?

It started to misfire and I pulled codes p2196 and P2198 but the engine light did not come on and I thought the light was meant to come on with the ignition on

Yes, if you put the key in and turn it to run but not all the way to start the CEL should come on. I would say if you can get the correct LED it would be fairly easy to solder back in a new one if your somewhat handy with a soldering gun. If you have limited experience with the solder gun it might be a little tricky.

If it doesn't detect so many misfires in a drive cycle it will not set the light. Badfish is asking for that purpose I assume. So if it comes on when you turn the ignition on the. The light is good it just hasn't turned it in yet for the misfire but the computer sees it and is storing the code. Also I think it's possible to turn the light off. So if you bought the truck used it's possible someone did that to mask the problem. Good luck.

That is why I asked. Some codes are pending, historic, ect so not all codes will throw a CEL. So once again I'll reiterate with Heath if the light does come on when the key is turned to run but not started then the CEL is good. If not then the light is likely out OR some have even taped over it to hide the light when they sell it. I also assumed since you knew it was an LED that you've been into the gauge cluster to check it which would tell me there wasnt any tape on the back side of the gauge faces to hide the CEL.

I think it's possible to change the led. And I think there are places you can send them and have them rebuilt for sure. You may be without your truck for a few days but def cheaper than buying a new one. Let us know how it turns out for you.

Check for any pending codes like it was said. Those don't throw a light
