They won't mess up your transmission as long as you don't try to up your shiftfirmness and fool around and set settings to high.

EDGE is for 4.6/5.4 but I believe you can buy a Gryphon (rebadged EDGE) by Bill at Powerhungryperformance. I think he can program it to run on a 4.2.. don't quote me on that but he might be able too. Check out their site.

Not claiming to be a mechanic, but I haven't had any problems yet. Prior to installing the Edge my tranny would act confused on when to shift from time to time. Especially when starting from a stop sign. I had it checked when under warranty but Ford didn't find anything wrong. I usually leave the Edge on Level 2 and even firmed the shifts up a little more. The truck feels healthier to me.

Your trans was probably slipping, and the EDGE helps give it a firmer shift, which is healthier.

I checked their website and I thought it always said 4.6/5.4 but it doesn't even show that anymore.

I'd suggest to you to call EDGE and ask. They will tell you 100%. Just because a shop said it will work, doesn't always mean it will.

If EDGE says it won't work on a 4.2, I'd suggest you go to Powerhungryperformance's forum and look around. They have a tuner called Gryphon which is a rebadged EDGE from EDGE specially made for Bill at PHP. I'm pretty sure he can program it to run on a 4.2
