Question E85 Fuel

First off let me say I wasnt sure where to post this, so if need be, can a mod please move it.

Ok, so i had no idea that my 2006 F150 was E85 compatable. I read that if your VIN numbers 8th was a "V" then your were good to go, which mine is and also there is a sticker on my gas door that says either E85 or Unleaded 87. So after seeing this an going to the gas station the E85 is a dollar cheaper a gallon, after sitting at the pump for 10 min or so worried about getting it i just bit the bullet and got the E85 for 2.85 gallon. I already had a 1/4 tank of 87 so i just mixed... is that ok?

I havent read anywhere that there was anything special I needed to do so i just did it. But im looking for some insight from all the knowledge here, was this a good thing ot bad thing? Should I cont to use E85 or not?

Any knowledge or anything would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Jeremy

Just did the same thing last night, took forever (slow pump) but so far I have noticed less mileage, I don't think it will hurt mixing, but we both need to wait until someone has a better answer, my 2010 seemed to run better with it, just felt like it was firing better. You need to keep in mind your maintenance schedule needs to be modified if you continue to use it.

Do you guys think this would mess up my custom tunes at all?

Currently running an 87 octane performance tune.

The tunes question is a good one and I would recommend contacting whomever wrote the tune. PHP, Edge etc.

Mixing in no issue whatsoever. These are flex fuel vehicles meaning that the engine controller can adapt to varying blends of ethanol fuel. In many cities you will see blender pumps that have a nozzle for 10%, 30%, 70%(rare), and 85.

You will see a change in mileage but lets face it. If we were worried about mileage in these we would have bought a Focus or Fiesta. I run exclusively E85 for the last 3 months. I get 10-12 highway vs the 12-14 I was getting. And it seems to do about the same highway as in town so I don't know what that means, but E85 has 2.99/gallon at my station since January.

Yeah I just read something about mileage not being as good, it basically said that you save the money upfront but in the long run you would spend the same if not more in the long run due to less mileage.

I looked in my manual and I didnt see anything about mixing, it just talked aboout using it if your vehicle was equiped but I guess I could have overlooked it.

Right, if I was in such a worry about mileage I would go get a 1990 Geo Metro 3 cyl.... yeah right

What is the adj maintance program that i would have to adapt to?

Page 394 under maintenance and specifications.

FFV engine:
If your vehicle is flex fuel capable, it is designed to use Fuel Ethanol, "Regular" unleaded gasoline or any mixture of the two fuels.

FYI **

It is best not to alternate repeated between gasoline and E85.

** If you exclusively use E85 fuel, it is recommended to fill the fuel tank with regular unleaded gasoline at each scheduled oil change.

Well that explains it, never looked in that section. Thanks for the heads up!

So now that I have used E85 I need to stick with it or 87 and not flop between the two?

Whats the difference in the maintance? And what is the purpose of fueling with 87 at an oil change?

Sorry for all that are reading this, i'm just not that educated on this and am looking for good responses

I read that section as, mix all you want. If you go all E87 or all "regular", dont flop 1 for 1 each time. Do 2 tanks of each and you should be good.

You only do it at oil change time if you have been running E85 the whole time and never had regular in it. Seems that they want you to run a tank of regular every once in a while.

Good point. I just emailed Troyers and they say:

"The FF vehicles have a sensor in the fuel system that detects the percentage of ethanol and properly adjusts to the E85 - we never tune for it."

I might have to try some, if I can find some.
