Default Differential

So I want to do a limited slip in my rear differential. My question is can I goto a junkyard and get the limited slip out of a 97-03 axle or is that axle completely different? Does it matter if the gear ratio is different than mine?(as in I only want the limited slip not the gears, so I don't have to change my gears?) does anyone understand what I'm saying? Haha if you do can I get some import?

If you have the 9.75 axle (all 5.4's do) the gear ratio of the donor won't matter, as there are no carrier changes. The only change I know of came in '10, and I think that involves the gearset, not the carrier. Have the donor clutches replaced before installing it, as they are a limited life item and prone to failure with age and miles.

My exp junk yard's are almost the same price as new and something with that much labor to install I would just price new till I found what I wanted at a good price.
That way you know what you have plus warranty.

Thanks guys but I'm not worried about prices I can get a set for like 15 bucks and I do all the labor myself. So labor doesn't matter

You are wanting to take just the LS diff out of the '97-03 housing and put it in your housing?
Seems like a lot of work for a mediocre "upgrade". You have no idea how worn the LS is till you get it out. If you are going through that work, spend the extra to get a good one.

A brand new Eaton Tru-Trac can be had for a little over $500, and is a much better differential than a LS, IMO.

Trust me I've looked into it but 15 or 500? I am thinking about buying a new 250 diesel so I'm not trying to spend anymore money on this...
