Differences between fx4 and 4x4
Is this a reference to the oft asked "why should I buy an FX4 when a 4x4 Lariat is 3k less?" question?
In the '11's it came down to a couple options, not sure if its still true. Both trim had various engines available to it, I believe the Lariat had bench seats availavble when the FX4 did not, they have two completely different interiors, so thats personal choice. Personaly I thought the FX4 interior blew all the rest away, and since you spend so much time in the truck, for 3k more on a 40k truck isnt it worth getting the interior you like best?
Also its my understanding that the skid plate option for the Lariat included only two of the three plates that the FX4 had, though I cant confirm or deny that......
There were a couple other things, but I think the main feature difference was the interiors...again that was on the '11, Im making a guess its similar on the '12.

I have an XLT 4x4 that has most of the FX4 trim options. Skid plates, 3.73 limited slip diff, and the 5.4 trition. So those things aren't necessarily FX4 specific, and mine was a lot cheaper than an FX4.
According to the window sticker, my '04 Lariat 4x4 has all the FX4 options on it, plus the premium leather interior w/ console. All the same, except for the dash cluster, very stiff shocks and the FX4 sticker on the side.
Why would your Lariat have FX4 stickers on it ??
To my understanding FX4 is a Lariat, but with the dark instead of light interior, skid plates, shocks, cool stickers, body colored bumpers, different F-150 badge on fender and different grille, standard FX4's come with black door handles, black fender flares and black grille w/ body colored surround, I have seen some with body colored door handles and flares, but I think that was an option. Mine has them but I replaced the stockers for painted pieces. I have also seen in this forum some talk of a locker in the differential, but I'm not sure if this is standard, optional, or aftermarket. I know there are more differences but I can't think of them now. Many of these things can be had on a Lariat, but it is an option, not standard equipment.
Chevrolet's are much the same in that a Z71 is a Silverado with skid plates, different trim options and alot of the same things that make a Lariat an FX4.
That's just what I understand. I could be wrong or misinformed.
But why pay more for an FX4 instead of a Lariat 4x4, because I like the dark interior and skid plates. Why pay more for a King Ranch, because you want the saddle leather interior and standard two tone paint, that's why.
