Default Difference between bigger and smaller rims

Ok i want to know why some people put huge rims on big tires. Wouldn't you want a smaller rim so you can have more sidewalk? I totally have nothing against bigger rims they look bad ***. But I'm gonna get some 35s or 37s soon and I think a smaller rim like a 17 would be better than a 20 inch rim. Plus there cheaper. I'm asking y'all is there a plus to having a smaller rim cause you have more sidewall? Please educate me on this? But be nice haha

Where I put sidewalk I meant to put sidewall but I'm sure y'all figured that out

I have 17 inch rims wrapped in 33" Nitto Mud Grapplers. I like the look of smaller rims personally

bigger wheel is usually for the looks, The only real advantage of going with a bigger wheel is so you can fit bigger brakes but even then you dont have to go huge to get bigger brakes. more sidewall with a smaller wheel is great especially if you plan on using your truck to tear up the trails.I myself love the looks of bigger wheels cars/trucks alike but there is definaltey a too big look. There is a picture flaoting around here somewhere of a DSG fx4 just like mine with 24in monsters and drooled over that thing the forst time i saw it.
haha I dont take my truck off road much

The rule of thumb is to have a rim now more than 1/2 your tire size. ie: 17"rim=34+ tire. Of course this is only applicable to people who actually off-road, it's supposed to help prevent flats and cushion your ride. Also allows more flex when airing down.

Appreciate the response guys! Ya I do have to admit those 24s are sweet!!! I do have one question for you guys and the only reason I'm asking is because I'm here to learn cause I do not want to make a mistake when spending the kind of money I plan to about sixty days.

I read in the tire wheel figment guide on here that are bolt patterns are 6 by 135 mm. That means I have to go with a 6 by 135mm rim correct?? Cause I almost completely forgot about that and ordered a rim that had a different bolt pattern!!!
