Smaller rim with a big tire offers more sidewall. This is most beneficial when off-roading. It offers more protection, reducing the chances of bending a rim. It also allows you to air-down the tires if you get stuck. A large rim (I'm running 20"s) are still capable of offroading, with some diminished capabilites. An excessively large rim like the 24 pictured....yeah it can go offroad, but expect damage if you hit a log/rock/llama at speed.

Ok thanks. The rim I was looking at had an offset of -12. Is the offset the backspacing or is that two different things? What is the offset?
