Diagnosing COP
I have a 07 F150 with the 5.4. It is shuddering at 1200 rpm in OD. Thank God for this forum. I joined last night to see if I could find info on the problem and spent 4 hours reading about this. I am convinced that I have a COP/spark plug problem. I am planning on getting new plugs and the Lisle tool for broken plugs. It also misses a bit at idle.
My question is...Is there a easy way to diagnose the coil packs myself or should I take it to my dealer for diagnostics????
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!

How many miles on your truck? My 05 had the exact same problem and I replaced spark plugs, cops, and vct solenoids and it made no difference. Does your truck tick and sound kinda like a baby diesel at hot idle? Could be cam phasers too.....
You can get a set of 8 ACCEL coils from Amazon for $205, probably cheaper than going to the dealer to replace one. I run the Accel coils because i was having the same problem as you, did the plugs and coils and it was much better. Alot of people on here run the Accels and I've yet to hear any problems. Just make sure you get the ones for the 3 valve 5.4. When you put them on make sure you use Dielectric grease on the end that hooks to the sparkplug, got a tube of Permatex Dielectric grease off Amazon as well. They also have the spark plug tool.

Mine is an 05 and the route I went... changed plugs, new boots on cop's, new airfilter, changed oil, changed fuel filter, new belt, cleaned throttle body and maf. All parts including $98 for the lisle 65600 was $398. I could have got lisle cheaper off of amazon, but had it in hand, so I bit bullet and bought it. I would recommend cleaning throttle body and maf and new fuel filter. I broke 2 plugs the very first one on passanger side and back drivers side. The one's that broke was the ones we used rachet on. All the others we brought out in tack with impact wrench. I was assuming they all would brake and decided to use impact and then just use lisle to bring out rest of plug. That's how it worked for me. The lisle tool worked great, just take your time and follow directions to a tee. Good luck. You should also check your FPDM under your spare tire. They get corroded real bad. Everything I learned from reading on this site.
