custom tune really needed?
just to start off yes i know a custom tune is the best thing next to having a dyno tune, and i understand that perfectly. however here is my dilemma i have an 05 fx4 with true duel exhaust and the gotts mod, those are my only power mods and will always be my only power mods, i have a rece car i dont need a race truck, so im my opinion a canned tune will do fine since my truck is pretty much stock.. what do yall think? im loking for more oomph on getting up to speed and slightlybetter gasmilage would also be nice, i dont tow with this and its my dd for now, and also my mudding toy..
any help on custom or not would be apreciated, just for reference iw as looking at the gryphon tuner from php, but any and all sugestions would be appreciated

You will probably be fine with the canned tunes with a Gryphon and a gotts/exhaust. The good thing is, if you buy one you can always order the custom tunes later down the road if you decide to go that way. They are only $30/each. But a custom tune is better and worth the $30 IMO.
trust me i understand that it is better and yes its only 30 bucks, but the 2 "mods" i have are not much of an improvement so i cant see what there going to customize as far as a custom tune goes, with the mustang i understand that completely (fully biult, bored, the works) maybe someone cant shed the light on me but as far as im concerned its unneccisary for the truck..
Your truck would be fine with canned tunes but would run significantly better with a good custom tune. I run a SCT X3 with a Troyer 93 performance tune and my truck runs tons better then stock or any canned tune could deliver. Is it a rocket-ship? No, but it runs really good. As far as MPG gains I doubt you would see little if any. The only way I have found any MPG gains is by running e-fans and the gains aren't great enough, IMO, to warrant the mod for the sole purpose of gas mileage. I did the e-fans and under-pulley for performance gains as well. If you feel you are good with canned tunes then run with it. Canned is better then stock.
I was kinda wondering the same thing. I have the same mods, its my daily driver, and I don't tow. I just want a little more power with the 33's and still maintain OK mpg's. I'm lookin at an Edge Evo. Anyone running and Edge Evo w/ the canned tunes that come with it, notice any mpg gains?
Some general rules for tuning
1. Custom is greater than canned tunes and give the best gain/$ invested.
2. There's nothing wrong with quality canned tunes as long as you don't have mods that warrant the use of custom tunes.
3. Mods that don't require custom tuning: Gotts Mod (doesn't change MAF environment), cat back exhaust mods (doesn't change O2 sensor environment), Efans, UDP, etc.
4. Mods that do need custom tuning: Most LT headers for best performance, aftermarket CAIs, forced induction, nitrous, etc.

I would suggest buying the tuner, testing it to see how you like it, then deciding what you want to do from there. I ran the canned tunes for a month while I waited for my custom ones and it was a big improvement over stock. But I love the custom 87 and 91 performance tunes from the guys at PHP. Just so you know, I ran my CAI for over 2 years with no tuner and no problems. So no, you don’t HAVE to get a custom tune or a tuner at all for that matter.

ok well my next question is a well sort of stupid one, on line it says 25-40 hp gains, i understand that it all depends on mods, so how much pick up will i see with the canned tune? and as far as a custom, what can they actually customize on a stock truck
With your mods and a canned tune, you might see 20-30rwhp, maybe a bit more with higher octane fuel. I had a few more bolt ons than you and had a dyno tune done and picked up 50rwhp.
The custom tune is superior because it is tuned to your specific vehicle and it's vehicle code. What type of driving you do, you can get different tunes for performance, towing, or economy, etc. I've used both canned and custom...believe me, don't waste your time with canned tunes.
