Just got a truck for my son 16 birthday and have notice the truck rattles on the passenger side sometimes on a cold start up. It quiets down usuall in a few seconds. Feels like stumble or miss like a bad cop when driving under a slight load when going up a hill around 45. Drives fine when i take it out of overdrive. Also if i get into it hard their is hesation and pop sound from engine like its popping through throttle body and at night the lights will dim. Only code it pulls is P0012. I have replaced the cam sensor and the VCT seniloid. Its a 2004 FX4 with a 5.4L. Any other ideas it could be?

Do you mean the VCT sprocket and will this cause the stummbling and hessation with the back fireing or popping sound when i floor board it?

 

From what i have read on here that a bad VCT would knock when warm. This one dosen't , runs smooth at idle , Just the old code P0012 with hassation and back fire through carb when accelatoring hard. Has a stumble like a miss when going up incline arounf 45 like its a coil bad. Any ideas on what else it could be?

 

have the plugs been changed? mine did similar b4 i change the plugs.

 

Haven't yet but from what it feels like when driving my 2002 f150 when a coil goes bad it pretty much feels the same except the back fire through the carb under hard accelartion. Still puzzle about the code P0012. Done changed cam sensor and the vct solenoid. From what i have read about the phaser it will be noisy when hot. Mine only makes a noise every now and then with a rattle on start up and quiets downs in senconds. Done racked my brain about it and just cain't put my finger on it. Running to smooth to be something major.

 

Ok , wanted to give a udpate. Ordered new set of SP-515 and a new set of DG511 along wit the Lisle tool. Coils arrived and awaiting plugs and extractor. They be here this afternoon. Last night i started on it. Pulled all the coils off and blew out each hole with a air hose and cracked each plug a 1/4 turn and soaked them down with PB Blaster. Got up this morning and started on it. 30 degrees out side and pretty cold. Well ,,, got all of them out without breaking none. Hopefully plugs will be this afternoon and get them put back in along with the new coils. Hope it will help with the slight miss and hesatition i was havening and under hard accelation hesatition and poping back through the throttle body. Don't think it will fix the P0012 but as long as it fixes the stumble problem and jerking i wouldn't mind .

 

Ok . Got the new plugs and coils in and what a difference. This thing runs like a newone. Runs smooth and no more hesation or poping through the throttle body. Still got the old P0012 code but the truck runs like a new one??? Was wondering if a Mass Air Flow Sensor would cause this?? Freeze frame shows MAF 0.00 when the lifght come on. Tried cleaning it twice.
