Default chip causing tranny damage?

Hey i got a 04 f150 fx4 and it came with a diablo tuner. Will it hurt the tranny if its set on firmer shifts? Just wondering because a freind of mine has a 07 and he has a edge programmer and he did that an when he was wheeling it the trans temp was 200 and the clutch packs blew out destroying the trans. I do not want that to happen to me expecially since his had 80k

I imagine the combo of the edge high shift points at WOT and wheeling wouldn't work well. Can't say its the programmers issue though. If I went wheeling with my edge I would set it back to stock. No need for such high shifting in the sand or mud. Just a lot of tire spin..

I've never had any issues...

But you could do damage depending on your settings... I generally control the 1-2 shift myself when wheeling and don't ever put it in drive, so the programmer would have little to do with it.

As far as hard shifts are concerned they are actually GOOD for the transmission, smooth shifts are obtained by slipping the clutch packs.... slipping=wear....

a firm shift is better for the trans than the stock sloppy shifts but overly hard shifts can be harmful. you have to find a happy medium. he blew his trans because he was wheeling and he overheated it. doubt it had anything to do with the tuner.

A "wise senior member" once told me that "A plastic bag can be dangerous if not used correctly". Use good sense a cut back when offroading or under harsh conditions...should be fine otherwise. The tuner is not the problem!

And, add a transmission cooler if your going to "play" if the truck does not already have one. It will help keep the temps down while 4 wheeling.

Im not gonna 4x4 mine just wondered if i tuned the shifting so it was at the firmest if it would harm it. I got a diablo programmer and it doesnt shift too hard but this is also my first automatic.
