Default Camper Shell ?'s

I just can't see paying the 1500 for a new one in order to give the dogs more room instead of sitting on the floor of the back seat with the kids. So I'm trying to find a used shell for my 05 SCREW FX4 with 5.5' bed. The super short bed has proven problematic in finding a used shell... To be exact I've only seen one and it was very over priced, the wrong color, and a weird window setup (slider on one side, flip up on the other and no pass through to the cab).

I know the fit won't be exact but does anyone have pictures of shell's meant for other generation f150's on an 04-08. I've found the right color in 5.5 length in the previous gen and multiple different colors meant for the next gen available. But what will and won't fit and how badly do they look?

The 09-14 shells will fit and look ok with some trim here and there, they're about an inch longer. The 03 and earlier are not even close. Where are you located? Are there any truck shops around that sell used units?

A couple years ago I bought a 5.5' topper on Craigslist for super cheap ($50). It was advertised as being 6'5" but was really 65" seller just made an honest mistake. It was in great shape so I bought it anyway and then used it as a trade in to a truck accessory store towards the correct used unit they had in stock.

Here's an example of going the other direction. 04-08 topper onto an 09+

I'd wait for the right one. I looked for a long time for my 6.5, plenty of short beds one and then suddenly a beautiful all glass Raider cap in the right color came my way for a few hundred bucks. Caps not meant for your year will just look goofy

I'd wait also. I searched Craigslist for months to find one for an 8' bed. Bought it for $300, painted for $200.
Or you could find one you're interested in and ask if you can test fit it. If I was selling one I don't think I'd have a problem if someone asked me that.

Well I've either gotta get the shell right here directly or a couple of kennels that I don't wanna store when not needed. If I don't do either then I'm grounded from anything more then a day trip. So I'm just a bit anxious to get something done on this.

There is one that looks promising. It's the right color and for an f150 but what year it is a mystery. The seller is asking 800, which I feel is quite steep, but of it's the perfect fit and color I won't complain too much about it. This is one that I originally thought was for the previous gen, but the more I look at it and pictures of customer images on Leer's website it may be for our trucks. It's the one attached.

That one looks like it fits over the edge of the bed, meaning you'll have to take the plastic caps off the bed rails.
Just a FYI.

Plastic rails stay in place. Leer seems to be decent quality but I did ditch the clamps and through bolt the topper to the rails. All in, I have about $300 into this one. There should be a serial number on an aluminum plate inside, if the seller can send that to you, you should be able to get the specific model information from Leer to verify the application.

With any luck I'll have one bought tonight. After scouring Facebook classifieds and Craigslist for weeks a leer popped up at about 1030 at night for 400 bucks. It even has the pass through window which none of the other 5.5' ones have. It's white, so I'll have to repaint. But I think I can do a good enough rattle can job using the duplicolor perfect match spray cans to look fine. Plus I never wash my cars/trucks so after a few weeks anything I screw up will just all blend in anyway.

Mission Accomplished.. I picked up a Leer meant for the truck this evening for 400. It is white & has a couple of chips along the bottom edge. So it'll need some attention. I am going to order some of the dupli-color perfect match paint & the clearcoat to go with it to repaint. Looks like it will be easy enough just to take all the glass out of the shell which will make it way easier. I dont mind sanding so much, but I really hate taping stuff off. I also cant think of the name of it, but I should be able to find some black rubber trim to cover the bottom 3/8" which will hide everyplace there is a chip & prevent any more from happening.
