Default Android HU with Steering Wheel Controls

Yes, I searched, and searched and searched. I couldn't find anything specific, so therefore I am asking for some help.

I posted a couple weeks ago about buying an Android Head Unit. Got it in, installed, and it sounds great! I already had a USB stick from Verizon for my laptop, so I just connected it and works great! I can listen to Pandora, IHeart, etc anywhere I go, and have complete and total access to the Play store.

Having said that, this unit has two wires for Steering Wheel Controls. And the interface to program what the buttons do. I know that on the large connector for my harness, 18 and 19 are the steering control wires, but my question is this:

The unit I have just says key 1 & key 2 (key two is to be connected only when the vehicle has 2 + wires for steering controls)

I know on our vehicles that the one wire is a signal and one is a return, right? Those of you that have had one installed, did you have to have a separate module, or were they able to hook it up without it?

Thanks for the help.

I figured it out. the one wire is the signal, the other is a ground that is common to the radio and the climate control.

So did you connect key2 wire to that second wire? Or did you just ground that second wire (return wire) to the ground on the harness

So you can use just the wires to the radio to hook up the steering wheel controls? I have 2 wires on the back of my headunit for steering wheel controls. Mine aren't working. I thought you needed like a $50 adaptor to hook them up? If not am very interested in this

The android hu's don't need the adapter because they have the software installed to learn the key presses

I am doing this android hook up myself.
So you wired Key1 wire to pin 18?
What about key2 wire? Does that one go to pin 19 or just ground it?

Anybody have an update on this? I just ordered a new radio and want to be able to make the steering wheel controls work. Radio is compatible with resistance controls. It says if it is CAN-BUS controlled will need another part. Radio has key1 and key2 wires. Any help here?

Well I will hopefully almost close this thread. I spoke to a nice fella who works for Metra (wiring harness, dash kit, ect) and he told me our truck steering wheel controls are resistive not CanBus controlled. So if your radio has a Key1 and Key2 wire you should be able to program it without an additional controller. Now as for which wire to which? I guess Ill figure that out when I hook my stereo up next weekend!
