Default 4x4 stopped working

Needed 4x4 today and it didn’t come on (triton 5.4 automatic). 4-5 months ago had a front hub and vacuum lines replaced. Can’t remember if I’d used 4x4 since but likely confirmed it worked after that repair. Possible causes?

Likely from who? The person that did the repair? Did you check the fuses/relays? Also, and people think I am nuts but, the dash switch can get loose.

If you had a repair you need to check it immediately following. Trust but verify.

I’m the one that would have checked it since that would have beten a concern obviously. Fuse is fine. Where is relay located in a 2004?

You might need to check the Vacuum controller. It's a known issue. It's under the hood on the passager side of the truck at the top. The old one might not have a shield on it. My old truck had the same problem, it's a easy fix.

You need to dig. Does the light come on the dash saying 4HI? Next is to lift the front of the truck up and see if the front wheels spin without the axle turning in 2WD, then do they turn the axle when you turn the dial to 4HI? Then go to check vacuum, etc..

I am fully prepared for Paul's next statement to say "The indications that it isn't in 4x4 are that I couldn't get it unstuck. Before all this happened I never got stuck in 4x4."

First reply out of the gate asked ya what is telling you that 4x4 isn't working? Any lights on the dash? Is 4x4 indicating at all? Is the switch bad? Or is it 4x4 on the floor?

4x4H and 4x4L lights never come on. Front wheels do not engage in either. Nor does it switch to LO gearing when selected. I’ve used this a lot and know how to work it. I think there’s a relay for it but don’t know where it is.

Without the engine running but the key in the ON position, do you hear the click when switching from 2 to 4x4 H?
