4 x 4 issues
I see a lot of discussion on this, what are people finding the issue to be?
I bought my truck about 5 weeks ago. 4WD high and low engaged during test drive and worked fine 2 weeks ago.
No actual "off road" use, just trying the switch and hearing the "clunk" from engaging, nothing loud. I would consider a normal noise.
It snowed on Tuesday and was slippery so I tried the 4WD and nothing, no 4WD, no indicator lights?
I've checked all fuses, removed the 4wd relays and inspected (no signs of moisture).
Is this the transfer case actuator motor?
I'm an industrial service technician so I'm more then willing to take my transfer case motor apart and see if it's fixable.
Just wondering what others found the problem to be?

I had a similar issue and for me it was the relays and they had no sign of moisture. They just didn't work. I think it was $20 for both relays, so it's not a huge investment to see if that's the problem.
Before doing that, it might be worth whacking your tcase actuator motor while someone switches it in to 4WD. This works for some people if it's the actuator motor that's the problem.

Slid under the truck and tapped on the shift motor and transfer case with a dead blow mallet, instantly started working again.
I've shifted it perfectly between 2H, 4H & 4L about 20 times since and all seems fine.
If it happens again I'll replace the shift motor.
For anyone else, don't hit it hard and use a dead blow hammer (rubber) it didn't take much.
I would not suggest using a regular hammer.

If it works but no light that could be a bad/loose connection. Could be at the bulb, along the wiring.
There are sensors in the shift motor, maybe they are not reading correctly?
This is from an 09 but it should be the same.

Unusual that 4L will work but not 4H.
I would check the procedure for testing the sensors in the shift motor shown in the TSB and see if you have an issue there.
I love these forums!
I had the exact same scenario as wiseacre - including the snow - and after searching the forum and finding this post, I went into the garage, malletized the motor and Bingo! I'm back in business.
Thanks, Island Truck, for posting the suggestion and thanks, wiseacre, for following up your original post with results. Just in time, too. It's supposed to snow here again tonight.
