Default 3 broken studs !!!!

Wholly smokes I was 2 blocks from my house heading somewhere when I heard something strange so I pulled over and my tire was being held on by 3 lugs. And just barely because they were half way spun off. I carry a 4 way lug wrench so I tightened the 3 down and went back home to take off the tire. The studs broke all the way down to the hub. 4 hours later I had all 6 studs out and the hub. The hub was rusted on pretty good because it's an 06 and they've never had to come off for any reason. I ordered 6 new studs which arrived the next day. I put everything back together and luckily my rotor was ok so I didn't have to replace it. 3 weeks prior to this happening I did my rear brakes and I'm assuming I over tightened the lug nuts. Now i know better but still a PITA hub job !

You didn't over tighten them, you left them loose. You won't want to admit it but that is why the studs broke and why the others were loose.

Been there and done that, in my younger years.

Lucky you caught before the wheel came off and did body damage.

^^^Agreed^^^...you should get in the habit of using a torque wrench or torque sticks on lug nuts. Improper torque can cause rotors to warp, vibrations, and well, wheels to fall off.

Your right, I had done my rear brakes 3 weeks ago and could have sworn I tightened them down but I guess not enough or way too much. I'll be getting a torque wrench tomorrow. I'm just glad I was only 2 blocks from my house and my tire didn't fall off.

So over-torquing lug nuts will eventually make them loose?!? I would think that if you over-torqued, studs would either break or you would struggle to get the lugs off next time...not come loose...

Over torquing can cause the stud itself to twist a bit and over time will weaken the stud. That's what I think I did. I drove around for 3 weeks after I did my rear brakes so if I wouldn't have tightened them down the tire would have been loose a lot sooner. Make sense ?
