Default 2008 stalling out

Im trying to find some information out for my brother. He recently bought a 2008 XLT 5.4. Its going back to the dealer for the second time in under a month. I tried searching for common problems for the 08 and didnt find anything. The problem hes having is when he is slowing down and sometimes when he puts it in reverse it will shut off on him. The first time he took it back in the mechanic told him that he needed an oil change. After he got rid of that tech they kept it and told him that they couldnt figure out what is causing it. It started doing it again yesterday afternoon and its going back in Monday. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar and if so what was it that fixed since the Ford Techs seem to be clueless. Thanks in advance.

Some things that should be done to every used f150 in this model bracket: 1) change plugs and coils 2)replace FPDM 3) replace 4x4 vac solenoid and check IWE's. 4) check/replace cats, especially if there have ever been any plug/coil/misfire issues 5) have PCM reflashed to most current update 6) add some friction modifier to rear diff 7) check VCT solenoids and replace if necessary 8) toss the 20 weight oils and go with a 30 with some Lucas added - Really quiets down that nagging engine tick. 8) clean the crap out of your throttle body - literally.

Can't say any of those are going to fix your problem, heck, some of them have nothing to do with it, but it's a start.

I have a 05 Screw and I had the same problem stalling out in reverse. It was a bad plug. I have over 100k and decided to change all the coils with the plugs. Runs smooth now, but I think the injectors also need to be cleaned/changed.

Op...has it rained recently in your area? Does it happen soon after the truck is washed or rains?

I had the same problem with mine, after it warmed up when i was coming to a stop it stalled, and in reverse. I changed my oil and its been 3 months and no more issues. But, the reason i changed the oil was because the dealer put way to much in and while checking things out to see why it stalled i noticed the oil was way over. So instead of just trying to drain a little i did an entire change.
So checking the oil is a good suggestion, even though you wouldn't think to do it for this issue.

Ok Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. He took it back in to the dealer today for the third time since buying. The service manager went for a ride with him. They didnt even make it out of the parking lot before it did it and the service manager told him that it is the cam phasers. Luckily for him its still under the dealer warranty since he just bought it and this is his third time taking it in.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm starting to believe my prob is the can phasers as well. I'm swapping my VCT solenoids tomorrow in hopes I can get a CEL for the opposite side. Keep us posted.

OK so today I swapped my VCT solenoids and the problem is still there. Crap! I did get some pics of my solenoids. The one I replaced last year(trying to solve this same issue) is still super clean and my original has some wear to it. So I've replaced both CPS and thru trial and error eliminated VCT solenoid as problem. I'm leaning forwards replacement of phaser, chain and tensions. Crap! I'm going to post a video of my truck throwing a temper tantrum tomorrow.
