The MBRP was $400, shipped to my door, and I put it on in 45mins.

So MBRP? How do they rack and stack against Flowmaster or MagnaFlow. I was looking for something with a good sound and performance. I don't mind spending money for a great exhaust set up.

Depends on budget/goals.
For NA truck, I'd drop factory muffler and add magnaflow in 18" body. This sounds nice/mellow and not obnoxious. You need a muffler and a hunk of pipe. Low cost.
From there, the cost really gets exponential. Catbacks start at about the $250 mark depending on quality. The MBRP XP is a nice system, this was what I graduated to after the magnaflow above, this was nice and mellow, more aggressive than the above mentioned magnaflow.
There is no power gained by doing much with the exhaust on a 5.4, so I wouldn't spend a lot of time/money on it TBH.

"Good" sound is in the ears of the beholder. "Good" sound to me is low and mellow, with no drone at speed. "Good" sound to my 22-year old neighbor is something that will blow the windows out of neighboring houses when he gets home from the bar at 2am.
You also state you want "performance", but as Scobar states, don't expect much by just altering exhaust on these engines.

No known catback has been proven to show an increase in HP/TQ to the wheels when used with factory manifolds and cats on an NA motor. I was unable to find any facts to prove an increase.

OP, I think Scobar answered your general question. You will need to be more specific of what your are trying to accomplish, in order to get more precise help.

My original intent was to go with a full system, but as someone mentioned piecing the system together is a much better option. As for performance, if it isn't a large gain it's not a big deal for me.

This is what did it for me.
