Believe me I feel your pain. I had to get a new engine. Ford/warranty company ate 5k of the 8k cost. My bank account ate the rest. I would love to have the new 5.0 in my truck instead of the 5.4. Heck for that matter I would take my old 4.6, that engine leaked oil/coolant and still never died.

I wonder if you have a vacuum leak that is causing a lean condition and your truck is overcompensating with too much fuel. That would send unburnt fuel into the cat which would clog it up.

You need to have the oil pressure checked with gauge and make sure it's steady and to spec. Try disconnecting VCT solenoids to see if anything changes. The fact that both side are over retard I doubt it's The VCTs and suspect that what you have is low oil pressure.
