Default 06 steering problem

Hello to all. I am new too this site. I have an 06 F150 supercrew 4x4 with a steering problem. It is difficult to turn, then it eases up then is difficult again. If I let go of the wheel while in a turn it will not come back as it should. Power steering fluid is at proper level, tires are at 35 lbs, and have no noticeable damage or leaks.

Recently had truck in 4 wheel drive. Is it possible that it has not fully disengaged? Maybe a bad pump? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Any noise or low groaning from the power steering pump? .Pop the hood, and have a buddy listen while you turn the steering wheel from left to right (engine idling and in park). Set the emergency brake for safty.

And welcome aboard. Glad to have you on the F150Forum!

I have not heard or seen anything that seemed strange. I'll have someone listen like you suggest though. Look forward to being a life long learner.

Also check the power steering lines for any kinks, causing fluid restriction from the pump to the power steering rack.

If the power steering lines have been opened/removed, you may have air in the system. Bleeding is easy; with the engine running, turn steering wheel to the left and right (not all the way left and right). Do this several times to work the air out of the system (bleeds air back to the fill bottle).

Check the U-joint in the lower steering column shaft for binding, then check your tie rods and tie rod ends for damage, then check the steering column shaft boot and bearing at the firewall.

GATORB8, you produce a great arguement for having the "online" manuals! I was at home, with easy access to my paper copies, yet was too lazy to get up and look at the diagnostic section to include all possibilities!

I used the manual to answer the question last week. This time I used the almighty search button to find what I posted in that thread (ironically with exactly the same title) https://www.f150forum.com/f12/06-ste...problem-51852/

Where are you from? There's a TSB out for "extreme climates" (Alaska and Canada) for which the power steering lines get shot after being exposed to -20 weather, I need to get mine replaced after this winter.
