Default 05 Throwing codes and running like garbage

On my way through Tucson my truck (05 FX4 5.4 112,000mi) started running with a slight miss, I assumed it was from a dead coil or plug (stock plugs). I stopped somewhere for about 45 mins, I noticed it was hard to start, it took about 10 secs of cranking before it took. As I continued towards home it started running even worse, I barely made it off I-10. CEL flashing, complete loss of power, very bad pinging and slight popping out the exhaust. There was a stench of raw fuel and haze coming out of the exhaust pipe. I stopped at a gas station for about 20 mins and let it idle. When I took off again the miss was gone and it ran much better all the way home (50 mi.). CEL light on - P0300, P0172, P0174, P2196(lack of heated O2 sensor). I will run scan again in the AM to see if more have been added. Faulty injector ? Ignition fault ? MAF sensor failure ? O2 sensor failure ? All fluids appear to be in the right places and right levels.

Anyone have anything similar happen ? I am bewildered on why it cleared up just as quickly as it appeared. It may appear obvious by the code readout but they can be misleading, I would appreciate some opinions before I start spending. Thanks - Bill

Check you fuel pump driver module under the spare tire on the cross member. they rot out sometimes and cause the fuel pump to starve the engine of fuel and act really goofy

In fact I seen your post in a previous thread in regards to the FPDM, It just so happens my truck lived 102,000 miles of it's life in Michigan. Thanks - I'll check it out tomorrow.

Here's what a FPDM in Michigan looks like.

I bought mine used with 100k+ last Friday. First rain Monday made it run like you describe. Replaced it, seems all is well (for now).

Well today I inspected the FPDM, It appears to be intact, no cracks and very little corrosion. Disconnected batt. for about 30 min, truck runs fine. I am going to go through a few drive cycles and see what happens.

Also When my truck flipped out I had just came down from 7000+ feet in altitude in less than an hour, maybe that had something to do with it.

I can't disagree with that - I have been putting it off for a while because I don't have the time right now for broken plugs. Soon for sure.

What does your air filter look like. I would suspect the MAF myself. The altitude shouldnt have an effect on your vehicle since it is baro is constantly monitored ( unlike older systems where it was only checked once at start up ). If it acts up again clean out the maf. I have seen small debri make it through the filter ( k&n and afe ) and cause similar issues. You dont have a single cylinder miss-fire( p0301 - p0308 ) so i wouldnt assume a coil or plug. Definately fuel or air deliver though.

TSB 05-13-4; Hard Start/Long Crank, Rough Idle, Engine Idle Misfire -MIL- DTCS P0300 Through P0308, P0171, P0172, P0174, P0175, P0316, P2195, P2196, P2197, P2198.
Issue - Some 2005 5.4L 3v engines may exhibit a hard start/long crank, rough idle and/or the MIL on, due to the intermittently stuck open injectors causing carbon fouled or wet spark plugs.
