X Plan pricing
Here's a good source that explains the different plans: http://www.at.ford.com/news/cn/Pages...%20to%20Z.aspx
On my truck, here's the numbers off the invoice:
MSRP $41,335
Dealer Invoice $38,121
A Plan $36,582
X Plan $38,244
So it's not +3%. In this case it was 4.54%.
On my 2010 Fusion, here are the numbers off the invoice:
MSRP $28,425
Dealer Invoice $26,581.01
A Plan $25,613.76
X Plan $26,749.69
So, in this case it was +4.43%.
As noted by others, the X-Plan can be made available many ways, i.e. any employee can give you a code (many employees get 4 X plan PINS per year), you can get them from belonging to an organization (some school alumni programs), and you can get them from having an employer that joins (Best Buy is one).
When you log in here at the Ford Partner site, everything you price is in X-plan dollars. If you view dealer inventory, you see X-Plan pricing, but be warned that the pricing already includes most, but not all rebates that are in effect at the time, and you can see which rebates have been taken into account on that particular model. Of course the dealer invoice will NOT represent rebates because they change all the time during the time the dealer has the car.
Maximum paperwork fee is $100 under X-Plan. My dealer charges me $75. Dealers also make a $275 admin fee, but that is included in the x-plan price.
I also looked into things like Costco pricing as well as pricing through insurance companies, etc., many of them using the same company for pricing (True Car). All of the insurance companies were higher than X-Plan. I don't like the Costco plan because:
- Dealers weren't near me.
- They don't have clear pricing, nor do the dealers give clear answers. I was given "invoice pricing" as the answer to my inquiry.
- They give you one dealer, not "here's 3 dealers within x miles of you.".
- Paperwork fee is $190.
If I truly had gotten "invoice", then I'd be $8 less under Costco, but would have to drive far and not gotten a trade price until they saw the car. My local dealer gave me a good price for the trade, he's local, he got the car from 2 hours from me on a dealer trade, he got my tow hooks replaced from scratches, ...
As far as negotiating for better prices, note that under A or X plans the dealer gets a specific commission, whereas if you negotiate they get what they get. My dealer is delighted to do A or X plans all day long.
I love people saying "I paid ___ less than sticker". They don't provide specific numbers, they do or don't include taxes, docs, titles, add-ons, trade-ins. What a bunch of useless info. The only valid comparisons are what you paid NOT including all that crap, plus either not including rebates or itemizing which ones you got so that people can compare apples to apples.

See, you're not buying it because you are a reasonable person. I swear, when it comes to "deals" I think the trash talking, gamer mentality kicks in. There is no way a sticker of 58K has an X-Plan of 42K. Wait, there is one way - and that is if the official Ford MSRP sticker was 46K and the dealer larded up the deal with 12K worth of goodies on a secondary "sticker". But then this "deal" doesn't look so good then, does it?

Figure things out by doing some research and then offer 2-5% over what the dealer actually paid. That will keep the lights on and pay the sales person. I never discuss my trade in while negotiating the price of a vehicle (here we go) because I like keeping them separate deals and it gives me an option to sell privately or kill the deal.
