I am not sure how the power saver works, but maybe hooking up a battery charger to the battery would keep you from having to start the truck? I'd call a dealership and ask a service writer about that. The only reason that might not work is that the battery saver might kick in automatically if the truck isn't running.

I did mine prior to driving about 45 minutes to a campgrounds, figuring I would be idling around there a bit too while getting to the site and unpacking. The actual time was only about 30 minutes, which included several system reboots.

It's not like they happen weekly, just take a long drive.

I did the upgrade to both my truck and wife's Explorer. My truck took about 25-30 minutes and hers was a little faster than that. It won't take an hour. I sat in hers in the driveway and played on my iPad. I had a drive to make for work for mine and let it update during that drive. It really isn't that long.

Well now, that might work. I just waited for a day I was going to be driving for at least an hour. I don't know if the "battery saver thingy" is operational when the cables are hooked up though. The update wasn't a matter of national security for me, so like you I didn't want to idle the truck for that long.

Maybe I'll sit in the truck with my iPad and watch NetFlix.
If you open the door the entire system shuts off. Then your back to square one again.

I wasn't happy about having my truck run either but I'm pretty sure that if the battery does die or something would shut it off during the process you might be SOL. It won't have any version fully downloaded and could lock up the truck so the only way to fix it would be to take it into a dealership and have them reflash it....if you can get it to start. Saving a little fuel isn't worth it to me.
