Overtight or stripped drain plug, plug left loose that leaks, forget to fill with oil, over/underfill with oil, old filter gasket sticks to flange so you end up double gasketed when the new filter is installed which causes a MASSIVE mess on start up. It goes on and on.

I've seen every one of those scenarios over the years with many happening in service departments and independent shops.

If a pro can make a mistake a person doing it at home can.

That said, I do ALL my own work on my vehicles barring A/C work.

When I worked the lube rack at the first Lincoln dealer I worked in I had several plastic "trays" that I carved out of washer fluid jugs for use in various cars to get the oil to drain into the drain bucket instead of splashing all over the frames.

Most often back then it was to direct oil from removing the filter, drain pans were always exposed and easily accessible.

With the actual oil draining it was a matter of knowing which cars would create a big arc of oil that would overshoot the pan, always fun the first time but you learn quick which cars require special placement of the drain bucket.

I run Motorcraft FULL Syn and filter in my 5.0 and it costs about $75 to do it myself.

I take it to the dealer get their special oil and tire rotation. Free ride to the house and back. Or I'll drop it off across the street from work (Different dealer--Fast lane Express) and pick it up at lunch. Most I have paid is $39.00 (sometimes less) for the service. Cheapest amount of money for the service.

Do the air filter myself. Something like $12-15 at Wal-Mart to buy.

And yeah, after working in a garage that worked on all types if cars and trucks you do the learn the trajectory of oil. Kinda like a missile. That's why I started this post. I saw a plastic log flume for my oil to come out of the filter, But yeah. It came out the backside
