Serious question. Why buy wheel locks when you have full coverage on auto insurance?

Lots of people have a $500 or $1,000 deductible. Or maybe they just want some piece of mind.

For the same reason I run a cable lock through the wheels of my motorcycle. To make something that's easy to steal, harder to steal.

Couple reasons:

1: Insurance deductible. Buying new rims and wheels suck.
2: Hassle. It is a PITA to get a vehicle that is sitting on its brake rotors (the crackheads don't bother leaving it on blocks these days) to a shop, or the wheels to the vehicle.
3: Damage done by the crackheads to the vehicle. If they drop it on the rotors, it may mean having to get those replaced.
4: Leaving you stuck in a very bad area of town. Not having a way to bail in some places of the country before dusk may mean the vehicle may not survive the night, perhaps the driver wouldn't either.
5: Why give a thief an easy time of it? Make them at least fight for their ill-gotten gains, perhaps if they are unlucky, a police officer might catch them in the act.
6: Safety. If a vandal loosens all lugnuts except the locking one, the rotors may warp, but the wheels are going to remain on. Better new rotors than to completely lose any ability to control a vehicle.
7: Deterrence. A crackhead sees a lugnut with the funky pattern on it, they will go to another vehicle.

Believe me, it is NOT a fun thing to come out and find your ride on blocks. Happened to me once, and I've got a great insurance company. I STILL had to put the new tires/wheels on myself just to get the damn thing towed. 6 weeks of body work later, I finally had my ride back. The effers stole my FACTORY wheels for Christ sake. Unbelievable hassle.

$50 for a set of wheel locks is definitely worth it for me. I can't recommend it high enough for people with premium wheels.

To decrease the cost of your insurance policy.

Insurance works on law of averages... if the average # of claims and cost per claim goes down, insurance is cheaper for all... doing your part to help keep the number of claims down by protecting your wheels from being easily stolen makes life more convenient for you and reduces everyone's costs.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

There is a balance where locks end, and insurance begins. Wheel locks are inexpensive, but good protection... and in these economic times, they are a must have, a good bang for your buck.

i'll never own another wheel lock. my wife bought a truck in 2001 that came with those locks. you don't know how many times they caused problems. we use the roadside assistance a few times, she had an accident, etc. seemed like every time it was getting lost. and when did we notice it was missing? when we had a flat. f....that! i took 'em off and put on regulars. haven't had a wheel stolen yet. btw, i always have stockers......no aftermarkets.

So, how much do you say my insurance policy will go down if I have wheel locks? Thanks
