Default Unknown steering problem

I have a 2012 F-150 Ecoboost with electric power steering. Soon after I begin driving and making some turns of angles beyond a couple of degrees, I get the Service AdvanceTrac warning on the dash. If I move to the Truck Apps on the dash, it shows my front wheel angle stuck at whatever angle they were when the warning popped up. My wheels still move with the steering wheel though. It resets when I turn the truck off and on again and sometimes just while driving.

It's throwing codes u0428, c1963,c1728, and b1596.

Finally, the steering wheel does not automatically return all the way to center. While power steering feels intact there is some minor resistance to get it back to center and minor steering adjustments.

This all began at once. I'm sorry, I'm not much of a motorhead to share more details beyond that. I've replaced the steering sensor module fuse.

The (non-Ford) truck shop is a little confused too as I've had it in there twice now. They reprogrammed the steering in accordance with the TS regarding the issue.

Start with mechanical. Make sure all the joints are clean and lubed. Do you mean C1278?

The EPAS is around $800-1000 for the part. Assuming you want a Ford replacement. So, hopefully it isn't dying.

I don't know much about these electric steering systems, but from your description it sounds to me like a steering angle sensor going bad or a broken/loose wire going to said sensor. But i have no idea if that would be serviceable or it would call for a whole steering rack replacement.

Sadly for your pocket book the EPAS (steering rack) is not serviceable. A complete replacement is the only option. If you don’t know how to replace it on your own (which requires some programming) you are looking at a pretty penny. It sucks. I wish these trucks where still hydraulic steering.

3 of the 4 codes seem to point to steering angle sensor. From the pics in this link it seems to be upper column, possibly in the steering wheel shroud.

The sensor on rock auto shows a plastic tooth that I'm sure could fail.

You said a shop reprogrammed a "TS", what's that? I would assume if you hooked up good scanner this sensor would show live data of the steering angle while the steering wheel is rotated to compare.

Good article:

https://www.motor.com/magazine-summa...oter-dec-2013/

I'm assuming they reprogrammed the ABS module based on a "TSB" mentioned in the article.

Nope, that is for the hydraulic steering only. The sensor is inside the EPAS, not separately serviceable.

Well that's what I had thought as well, but then here's this part? Rock auto lists one as well.
