Default Tailgate Key Question

Hey Folks, I have a 2014 Lariat and have a question about tailgate keys. I only have one key for the truck (I know, I know, I need to get another made ASAP) and it works to lock/unlock they tailgate perfectly. I have a tonneau cover and like to keep my tailgate locked. My question is, can you get your key copied without a chip or anything (re. cheap) to use just to lock and unlock the tailgate? I keep a keychain in my truck with toolbox keys, etc. so I do not have to turn off the truck and pull the keys out of the ignition when I need to access my toolbox. I would like to do the same with a spare "tailgate only" key if possible.

Thanks!

Yes that'll work just fine. No chip needed for the gate or the doors.

You may want to consider putting an electric lock solenoid in your tailgate so it works with your power locks... probably the best mod I've ever put in my truck, solenoid was $10 and the wiring can be tapped in the passenger's side rocker, about a 1-2 hour project. Just a though.

Great idea and that would be awesome. Any more info on this? Where you got the correct solenoid, instructions, etc? If not, I'm sure I can figure it out. Thanks for the idea.

Got mine from Amazon for under $5. Already had wire, hooked it into the driver side door lock wire. Later added a quick release connection in case I ever need to remove the gate.

I got my actuator at Princess Auto for $10, like Spiky I already had the wire which I ran from the passenger side rocker, there was a grommet right there to get from the wiring (under the plastic kick plate) through to the bottom of the truck, then ran the wiring along the frame, put a 2 wire trailer type connector at the tailgate, and then did the connection to the lock in the tailgate. I can't remember which colours (but purple and brown come to mind) I used in the wiring but a quick Google will tell you, as well I used the passenger side wiring as it unlocks on the second click of the key fob or after hitting the 3/4 button on the keyless entry. Between the power lock in the tailgate and the keyless entry I only need my keys when actually going to drive the truck. I can't remember the last time I used my key in the tailgate, has to be a few years ago.

Pop N Lock is pretty much the same but at $115 for the Pop N Lock I'll go generic & save myself $100. The Pop N Lock still has to be wired up to the trigger wires, might save 15 minutes on the install.

I have a couple of basic, non-chipped keys. My truck doesn't have the door entry keypad, so if I accidentally lock my key in the truck, I was screwed.

so I keep a basic key zip tied/hidden under the truck. This key will unlock the door, then you got 15 seconds or so to hit the fob or insert the chipped key.

also, I do residential construction from time/time. I don't want my wad of keys in my pocket, so I lock them in the truck and only have the flat basic key in my pocket.

this also works great for cyclist, joggers, sportsman, that doesn't want keys in pocket.
