Would be a simple fix... just drill a few 5/16 hole every spot where there's "supposed" to be a weld (I don't see any nuggets of penetration from your pics)... plug weld them up, prep and paint. They may not even have to paint the whole tailgate, not sure.

And yes, it would be a stronger weld than a spot weld.

just went and picked it up

they didn't drill thru and plug weld them... instead it looks like they just laid it back down and welded it flush... either welded or bonded it somehow...

we'll see how well it holds I guess; if it snaps again, I'm going to ask that they just replace the damn tailgate...

but it looks nice at least

If they did plug weld it-you couldn't tell. If they drilled-welded-ground smooth-primered and painted, you would never see any evidence of it. Anyway, good luck w/it

I would say the DID plug weld it... I mean if not you would see a weld around the bracket...

Yeah looks good. Did they end up painting the whole tailgate or just inside?

We started using a silicon bronze alloy MIG welding wire at work (bodyshop) a couple years ago. Great stuff; uses less heat; just as good in structural integrity (allegedly, insurance co says so); and very easy to grind/sand. Can make it flush with the surrounding metal without distortion or any other evidence... very cool stuff.

Anyway, your truck is whole again, that's what matters.

They just painted the inside; they didn't have to redo the entire thing. I washed the truck today and inspected the entire tailgate; it's all good

Yeah it looked kinda stupid driving around without a tailgate on a brand new truck
