Default tailgate hinge SNAPPED!!!

So I'm outside moving some stuff around, and throwing out a bunch of stuff; bringing some boxes to the end of the driveway for the trash collectors to pick up. It's about a 30ft driveway, and I really don't feel like walking up and down it 10 times to carry a couple large boxes to the end, so I figure I'll grab my keys, back the truck up, load the stuff in the back, and just make one trip down there with the truck, unload, and be done with it.

I back the truck up, get out and lower the tailgate, and then take two steps towards the boxes, and I hear "SNAP!!!"

I turn around and look at the truck, kinda looking like this

I looked for a second, kinda scratched my head, and didn't see anything obvious... so I proceeded to grab a box and toss it in the bed of the truck.

Well, through mid lift of getting the first box into the bed, this cought my eye

that's right... the freeking spot welds on the tailgate hinge on the passenger side broke loose...

the tailgate still closes all the way, and there's no interference between the tailgate, hinge, or bed, and the gap is normal, so that's good at least

disregard the fact that the truck is so dirty in the pics

but anyhow, guess where this truck's visiting tomorrow...

Ouch!

That sucks.... Now I feel obligated to go look at mine... although I think the spray in liner covers that.

Wow that sucks. I've never seen that happen before, even on very old trucks. Crazy!

yeah why Ford found it necessary to spot weld the hinges on instead of just bolting them on is beyond me... now they have to replace the entire tailgate...

hopefully?

there's no "hopefully" about it, they WILL fix it; the truck's only got 2200 miles on it, lmao

I took this about 2 days ago

I'm sure they will warranty that. Another good question would be, Are there more like this? I'm concerned now

I searched, and I came up with nothing...

if I'm not the first person for this to happen to, I might be the first to post pics of it on the interweb

Wow, that is especially scary to me. I have to drive from Alabama to Texas with my motorcycles rear tire resting on the tailgate next month. Man, I hope my spot welds hold up better.
