"A pattern of incompetence and neglect"
Car and Driver did an article on this. Even with the key off people should be able to steer them clear of trouble...what surprised me was the number of those that died who were impaired or not wearing their seatbelt. Not all blame lies with GM.
I think there was a certain complacency at GM about the issue. Good to see people being held accountable. Maybe next time there is a potential issue, they and other manufacturers will be a little more responsive.
Why am I so harsh? Because when GM finally sent out the ignition recall letters, they sent some to the families of previous accident victims. For real!
Terri DiBattista, who lost her 16-year-old daughter Amber Marie Rose in a 2005 Maryland accident involving a Chevrolet Cobalt, told Reuters she received two recall notices from GM last week asking her to bring in the vehicle to fix the ignition switch and power steering. The car was destroyed when Rose crashed into a tree.
And as stupidly and slowly as the NHTSA handled the ignition problem, I wonder what GM would have done about it if there was no NHTSA?
