Default Overdrive Control

I'm trying to figure out if I can turn overdrive off in my truck. I've got a 2011 XL supercrew with a column shifter.

The only button on it is the tow/haul mode. Is there any way to turn overdrive off? I can't figure it out.

Thanks

On the column shifter there should be an + and - button. When the truck is in D you push the minus to lock out 6th gear (the light for 6 should go off), again to lock out 5th gear, and so on. Push + to re-enable them. In D mode the truck will still shift automatically, just not using the gears you disable.

You can also put it in M mode and use those arrows to manually cycle through the gears.

XL's don't have SST (select shift transmission). It can be added but it requires replacement of the shift lever as well as a different instrument cluster. That's if the op has the 6 speed and not the 4.

Oh, I thought it was standard. The XL I just bought has it. But, mine is a 2014. The other ones I looked at with the basic dash still had a row of gear lights above the PRND indicators.

Tow/Haul is as close as you will get.

As stated elsewhere:

“The tow/haul button does not lock out O/D. It changes shift points to better keep the motor high in the torque curve. But it will still use all the gears when appropriate.”

"Overdrive" is just a marketing term. Not sure why you would want to lock out top gear except for possibly towing. If you don't like the way it shifts, get a tuner.

Not standard in 2011. It's also possible the previous owner of your truck added it. I'm not sure if the 14 XL's had it either.

I didn't know there were vehicles that didn't have an overdrive lockout. I don't know what to say. I've been locking out O.D. for ~30 years.

I don't quite understand why overdrive is a marketing term, but okay -I guess.

I've known people that have also done this, but have yet to hear a good reason for it. Its just like everything else on a car/truck it has a time and a place.

"Overdrive" is an engineering term that has been bastardized by various marketing departments. The Overdrive gear should be greeter than 1:1 but that isn't always the case. In this case 5th and 6th are both greater than 1:1....so technically they are both overdrive...so which one do you lockout?

I have got the 6 speed. Is the swap as simple as the cluster and shift lever?
