Default Noise when decelerating

So I've noticed something weird. I have the stock street tires on my 2011 f150 xlt 4x4 and it's very quiet on the road. Whenever I decelerate from 60 mph, I hear a subtle howl that seems to be coming from the rear end. It's like a gradual sound that sounds like gears whining down. Normal for this truck??? My dealership installed a new flange on the rear end because the original was making a knock and shudder on take off. The tech said the flange also had an oil slinger in it that went inside the diff. Wondering if that's what is causing the noise? UPDATE If I put the truck in neutral the noise stops. That has to be the transmission right?

Does the noise go away when you tap on the gas pedal slightly?

If so, it needs a new crown and pinion gear set in the rear differential.

Mine i believe is doing the same thing. It's happened after i engaged 4x4 during a snow storm. I have a vibration / gear humming noise that goes with the speed and rotation of the tires.

I engage 4x4 it goes away. I dis-engage...it comes back monetarily. Any thoughts?

I have a humming noise that goes with the tires, it is most noticable at 90km/hr

It's really bugging me but I can only hear it if I have the radio and heater off.

I believe you have an IWE noise. Either the solenoid or the actuator at the wheel. In 4x2, the vacuum is supposed to pull the actuator away from the hub, but if it doesn't have enough vacuum, it's partially engaged in 4x4. Which is why your noise goes away in 4x4 mode.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will try tapping the accelerator. The noise does go away/reduces if I put it in neutral while still slowing down. I have no vibration or anything that I can feel,I just hear it. And I cannot hear it over the radio.

Thanks for the response.

Do a search, there's plenty of threads on here for IWE (integrated wheel end) diagnosis and repairs.

Best I can describe this noise is it sounds like I have mud tires when it slows down to 50mph and under. I spoke with my dealership today. Bringing it back AGAIN Monday....I just hope this truck ends up being a good one....They changed the transmission fluid at 57k when I bought it, but they did not change the filter....just sucked out the old and replaced it with new. The thing that bothers me about that is what if the magnet at the bottom of pan is covered in broken metal pieces? Guess I will never know lest I pull the pan myself and change the filter, which I plan on doing at 100k. I dunno. Seems like it's hard to get something to last nowdays and you pay out the *** for it. I'd be willing to bet my noise is the transmission; whether it's normal or not I don't know. I also have a noise coming from the engine serpentine belt area. Sounds like a bad idler/tensioner pulley. They will be looking at that also.

There's a solenoid pending the year of your truck. Located top right of the fire wall on the dicey side where the vacuum lines are. I disconnected it. By bassed the valve and it went away. Re-connect correctly. It came back. Part is available @ autozone for $20. Ordering mine now.
