MPG increase with mileage?
2013 FX4 SuperCrew EcoBoost - bone stock
I am currently getting 16.4 average, with about 70% highway driving. I have been trying to adjust my driving style to keep it below 2k rpm and setting the cruise on 70 instead of 78. This appears to be good for a .4 increase, but I've only been doing it for a few days, so the overall average could continue to climb. The truck now has about 2300 miles.
I am hoping the mpgs go up as the truck "breaks in" - it would make sense to me that as it loosens up it would get better, but I could be wrong. *IF* that theory is correct, how many miles should I expect to run before there is improvement? What did you guys experience as the truck gets older? I'd also assume running the A/C hurts me some.
I traded a 12 Tacoma PreRunner Sport that averaged about 19-20 driving the same roads/routes that I do now, but I didn't pay any attention to "driving it easy". I hope I don't have to baby this one all the time to get comparable mileage.
Maybe I'm asking for too much, I realize the FX4 is a LOT more truck than the Tacoma, but I really hoped to be close to the same mpg.

In the first 1k miles on my 5.0 4x4 screw I averaged about 16.5 and now I'm right under 3k miles averaging 17.7...I do about 75/25 hwy/city and don't baby it...hwy I'm cruisin 70-80 and get on it a lot in my stop n go city driving (just love the sound of the new 5.0)
I can't speak for everyone as I said I'm only at 3k but I'm sure there's a lot of other guys that will agree that they're mileage probably got a lot better by the time they've hit 10k and hits a plateau then...maybe some other ecoboost guys with more miles will chime in for ya.

I would be pretty happy if I was getting 16.4mpg when most of my driving was at 78mph. The sticker on your window probably said 21 mpg, but that's figured at speeds of 55-60 mph, not interstate speeds. If you want 19-20 mpg you need to keep your speeds below 65 mph.

3.7 V6, not an ecoboost
Funny you posted this as I had some of the same questions regarding my truck and kept reading here about waiting for the break in point. I am over 10K now and just took a trip to Elkhart, IN from Kansas City and back over a 4 day weekend. Ran into a variety of weather and road conditions (August in the midwest), I admit to varying speeds as well and at times over 70 and some stop and go construction. For the entire trip, I averaged 22 MPG which is the best i have had thus far. Most longer trips until now have not been more than 19 MPG averages so this trip was a surprise. I hope it helps in some way.

I take an 800km+ round trip often. For the first 25,000km, my last trip was always better than the previous one. The last couple of trips have pretty much stayed the same at 11.5L/100 or 20.4MPG. I suspect I've finally reached the break in with the 5.0L. This is from Halifax, NS to northern New Brunswick for those familar with the route.

Boost :)
In theory it could increase with mileage on the truck, when in fact, it may just be you learning how to drive it a bit better and get more mileage.
I have had two EB SuperCrew's now and they both got the same mileage the day I drove them off the lot as they do today. The Platinum I just bought 3 weeks ago went on a quick weekend trip the day after I got it and it averaged 21mpg on that trip. I went last weekend to the Dallas area for Labor Day and again 20.5 roundtrip on that one. I have about 1500 miles on it now.
The last truck had almost 40k when I traded it in. It went EVERYWHERE. Drove it from Austin to San Diego and back (19.5 average w/ some areas being 80mph speed limit), went all over TX for my job doing various Industrial site inspections and could always get 20+ on the freeway.
To add another log to the fire, the manufacturer already breaks the motors in prior to putting them in the truck. They need to make sure rings are seated and seals are good before putting them in a truck. If they didn't, you would hear of people all the time having issues on test drives and shortly after buying them because they beat on them too hard and washed cylinders or blew something out without doing proper break in procedure. Ford and every manufacturer knows that 99% of their customers don't know how to properly break in a fresh motor so they take care of that for you.

My 3.7 was the same since day 1. Coincidentally, it was 15% better than my Tacoma.

Zero out the Eco gauge as it takes forever to change a 2300 mile average. I zero mine before and after towing trips. That way you see the mileage you are getting now instead of the average of the last few thousand miles.
