Default LED Headlight and Foglight Conversion

I recently retrofit all exterior lighting to LED with the exception of the headlights and foglights. I did not want to install resistors; as I read those get really hot. So I just replaced the bulbs; and had the hyper-flash issue.

This lead me to the forscan setting for disabling the "outage" for turn, corner and stop lights. Awesome, no more hyperflash!

Now, I'd like to do the same with my headlights and foglights. I didn't see forscan settings for "headlights" and "foglights".

Before I get too far into this; does anyone know if there are also forscan settings for headlights and foglights outages; so I do not have to use resistors?

You will not get anything for a headlight out or a foglight out, so there is no need to do anything in Forscan. Having said that, be very careful with putting LED bulbs in the headlights and foglights. The headlights are doable as long as you get the LED bulbs with the low beam shield and they are positioned correctly in the housing. Otherwise it will be glare city and you will not be liked. The foglights are another issue. I know of no foglight bulb that comes with a shield so glare is super bad out of the foglights. If you want the LED look get the Morimoto XB clones off of amazon.

Perfect!! Yes, understood about being disliked... and I don't want to be "that guy". I appreciate the tips; and I'll go check your suggestion now.

Oh man, I love those!! Thank you very much!! I hadn't seen those in my research. Absolutely perfect and exactly the look I like.

Now... any suggestions on led headlight enclosures??

I have to disagree about the foglights issue. With them being so low to the ground and (clocked) to the 90 degree position they should be fine. I have LED Switchback fogs in my Oem housings. I have not been flashed and they have a surprisingly sharp cut off. I’ll see if I can find the pics I took during my review posting.

edit: here are two pics. The first is foglights only. The second is foglights and osram CBI in Oem HID housings.

Thank you, @LexPD. This is my first time installing LED head/fog lights.. so I'll need to do some further research on this "clocked positioning" (although I do REALLY like those Morimoto's). The stock fixtures are fine; so I don't necessarily need to replace those. I am interested in halo rings or strips or some sort; as well as DRL. Just so many out there... and from my experience, aftermarket enclosures are hit/miss with exact fitting.

Your handle suggests Lexington Police. I don't know if you're in Kentucky... but I am involved with LMPD through contracted services.

No worries josh. We are all here to help as best we can.

In my honest opinion, I would much rather have the Morimoto setup. But the $180 price tag was a little more than double for what I paid. And I also wanted to have an amber/yellow for bad driving. Here in Kentucky we can get some crazy weather. When I say clocked, it just means the led chips or whatever you want to call them are at the “3 & 9” position relative to the housing.

And yes you're correct. I have been with the Lexington Police dept for almost exactly 7 years. My academy start date was 8/20/2012. It’s good to see someone from around this area on here. Not many of us here. I know there’s a couple from eky and one or two from south central.

This is fantastic information. Thank you, again. The pictures help tremendously; and I'm sure I'll be referencing them again when I do the install. Agree about the price. That will probably end up being the deciding factor; as I really like the light from the fogs in your images.

I may end up PM'ing you in the near future. We just had a demo with the SPI; and met so many honorable men and women. I can't tell you how much I respect the line of work!

Okay, enough business. More pleasure

So the yellow color helps with bad driving conditions; like with the crazy freaking snow we sometimes receive??

check that thread out. A lot more in depth. Now I will caution you, I have had these since June. I have already had to warranty claim both due to failure to illuminate. With that being said, I initially claimed one wouldn’t light and they sent me a whole brand new set. If I continue to have problems with them, I may request a refund and switch to Diode Dynamics or some other brand.

To answer your amber question. Allegedly the yellow is easier to see for on coming traffic. And it also reflects far less light when comparing to HIDs. When I say reflects, I am talking about it reflecting off the rain or snow. I have been in two extremely heavy downpours at night, and the Amber definitely did illuminate in front of the vehicle more than running them on the 6000K setting.

Thank you for the the kind words in regard to my job. If I’m being honest, I can’t imagine a more taxing job emotionally and physically other than a military career. It is hard. I have seen and been a part of things I won’t discuss on here publicly. But it is a very honorable profession and I take much pride in it. And the men and women I serve with are bar none the most amazing and dedicated professionals I’ve ever met.

Feel free to PM any time. I always respond.

The problem you'll see with LEDs in factory housings is poor pattern, much like the pictures above provide example of. Supernova bulbs produce an ok pattern in these trucks but it's still not very good. Most other bulbs spread the pattern too much and reduce the reach while just blinding traffic
