if you feel like spending some money the products they recommend here are all great. otherwise they atleast have the basics as well as what to cover up.

Pages 373-375 in your owners manual shows you what to cover if you wash your engine bay. (Basically, avoid the battery, intake lid/MAF and the fuse box in the front center of the engine bay)

• Spray Motorcraft Engine Shampoo and Degreaser (ZC-20) on all parts that require cleaning and pressure rinse clean. In Canada use Motorcraft Engine Shampoo (CXC-66-A).
• Cover the highlighted areas to prevent water damage when cleaning the engine.
• Never wash or rinse the engine while it is hot or running; water in the running engine may cause internal damage.
• Never wash or rinse any ignition coil, spark plug wire or spark plug well, or the area in and around these locations.

I used to sell a few cash cars at my father-in-laws used car lot. Every car I would get I would, while running, hose down everything in the engine bay. Then spray a water based engine degreaser all over and use a bristle brush on all the exposed areas that needed it then wash it down, all while running. Then I'd spray on a local bulk made "super blue", it's basically like a spray on armorall.
I recently researched this same topic last month and found on a BMW site a guy that uses "Scrubbing Bubbles". Since my truck was pretty clean already it worked awesome(no greasy areas, mainly just dirty). While cold I used up a whole can spraying everything I could see. Then let it "scrub" for 10 minutes. After that washed it off with a garden hose then let it run to dry it. Sprayed some armorall on it and it looks great! No scrubbing at all, unless you count those little bubbles.

The following front inner fender shield attachment is standard for the EcoBoosts, however, not for the others.
AND ... The shield attachment is not available by itself - you have to purchase the entire inner fender liner. *SIGH*
Fabrication consideration.

Once you've choosen your chemicals and methods, clean / wipe-down the engine bay every time the vehicle is washed. You'd be surprised what a damp rag, spit-shine and/or lemon Pledge dusting will do.
