Default HalfShaft replacement

Anyone ever done a half shaft replacement on one of these new f150's. I got the service manual and it says to use the half shaft removal tool. Anyone got a good way to get these in and out without the tool? Anyone got any comments, tips, or tricks

If you have an Autozone near you, they have the tool available for rent at least they do here. Good luck.

Not to bump an old thread, but I am in the middle of this job and also need to get the passenger side half shaft out of the differential. Without the tool, is there another method for removal?

If you mean the CV shaft. Give it a sharp pull and it will come out. If not a tap with a hammer works too. there is only a circle clip that holds it in.

Not much room for me to pull, since the strut is kind of in the way. I've been yanking on it and it hasn't moved much. I'm thinking if I can manage to get enough clearance from under neath to smack it with a hammer, hopefully that will work. the service manual lists a half shaft removal tool, which is basically a slide hammer.

Does the vehicle being in neutral or not have anything to do with it? The manual says to put the vehicle in neutral, but I'm not sure what difference that would make.

If we are talking about the front CV joints, then no I do not see why you would need to put it in neutral. try a rubber mallet just in case.

My mechanic is the one that told me you can yank it out.But he is used to working with a truck on the lift.

Thanks for the tips, I was able to remove it by getting underneath and hitting it with a hammer a few times. Came right off. I was able to install the new one without any issue and the test drive checked out.

Thanks again.
