I have had my 2010 Lariat Screw 4x4 for about two and a half weeks now and have already managed to put 2200 miles on it and absolutely love it! I am going to have a remote start added and have already ordered and picked up the Ford Gold Remote Start/Security system with the 6 button fob along with the SecuriLock interface kit. I went to the dealer and picked it up this afternoon but on the way home I stopped by the local car audio/video installer that does some really nice work and got them to give me their input on what they would put in. They recommended a Code Alarm CA6550 2-way system with remote start & alarm. The factory system is only a 1-way system which is not a big concern for me but it got me thinking about the range.

My question is what is the range for the remote for the Gold factory remote start/alarm system? I know that a separate antenna is provided with this system that mounts above the rearview mirror so I am pretty sure the range for the remote would be greater than the range on the standard keyless entry remote that comes with the truck. That remote only works up to 100' +/- most of the time.

I want the Ford system so that if anything malfunctions on the truck the dealer can't claim that it is because of the aftermarket system. I appreciate any insight or comments.

I know several people that have the Ford system (we were buying it in our fleet program) and not one that thinks it's good. Even the Ford dealership that I use told me they do not recommend it and that they normally install the Compustar 2-way units instead.

The key is to find a good installer, there are several good aftermarket units out there. And yes, go with a 2-way, it's a beautiful thing to have the key fob tell you that the car did in fact start.

I currently have the 6-button Ford alarm and rmst system on my 09. I've been using the Ford rmst systems for 8 years and love them. They never let me down, always work every time. Sure they don't have the fancy LCD remotes with 2-way confirmation, but if you don't need that, then who cares. There is a 2-way Ford system available, it's a remote start only (no alarm) and there's a little light on the remote that lights up to let you know it started.

There's plenty of others that are happy with their Ford systems.

anyways, as far as the range, I think it's at least 1000 feet. some aftermarkets have greater range, but again, if you don't need it, then who cares...

 

I'm going to add the remote start before winter.

 

My dealer installed remote starter works from inside my crib out to my truck which is probably a 150ft distance. Hasn't failed yet.

 

I've installed systems into homes where you can call a number, enter a code turning on lights, the water fountain, etc...

I just have to figure out a system for a vehicle so you can dial a number on the cell phone and the car starts.

I won't buy a factory one again, the range is horrible.

Thanks for the offer but I just had a local shop order the Viper 5301 for me. That is the remote start with keyless entry but without the alarm. The more I thought about it the more I didn't want to fool with the alarm. It should be here in a day or two and I plan to get it installed Friday. They gave me a fairly good deal so I figured I'd give them my business. They were about the same price as Best Buy but I feel much more confident with this shop doing the work as opposed to Best Buy.

I had Ford install an aftermarket one after they told me the same thing that the ford one was crap I went with Titan Remote starter and alarm. 2-Way I luv it and the range is great. They have all kinds of other options that you can add onto them as well after such as GPS tracking and txt-to-start cappabilities. But the txt-to-start is expensive you are pretty much buying a cell phone that is part of the truck unit and you have to buy an airtime plan. but none the less it is cool.
