If you ended up giving us step by step instructions, that would be okay, too. Thanks!

Quick update: I bought a new TED for the bottom of the seat on Ebay for ~$110. I have not installed it yet because it's cold and snowy outside, but I did reach under the seat, unplug the old TED and plug in the new TED. The new TED works perfectly and the heater no longer shuts off after several seconds.

The bottom line: the bottom TED appears to be the issue with my truck seat. As soon as the weather warms up a bit, I'll install the TED and post some pictures. It appears that the device clips onto the wire spring under the seat cushion. If so, it should be a pretty easy install.

More to come.

Good job! Can't wait to see how the replacement goes, just in case I need to do this again. Make sure to take lots of pics!

I am having this same issue on my 2011 Fx2 (heated only). Some great info here, thanks guys.

Is this covered under the extended warranty by chance?

Not with the extended warranty I got. The list of what isn't covered is twice as long as what is covered.

I didn't get an extended warranty, but it was covered under my Geico Mechanical Breakdown coverage (after a $250 deductible).

I just replaced the TED in the seat bottom, and it took me about 20 minutes. It's a very easy job, and I have a warm seat once again. I bought the part on Ebay for $100+. The part number is 8A5Z19N550C.

Here are the steps that I followed on my 2010 Super Crew:
  1. Slide seat forward and remove the 2 bolts that hold the back of the seat to the floor. They're under round plastic covers that pop out with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
  2. Slide the seat back and remove the 2 bolts that hold the front of the seat to the floor. These are fully exposed when the seat is all the way back
  3. Slide the seat forward again and rake the seat-back all the way forward.
  4. Rotate the seat back, but be careful because the wiring harnesses are not quite long enough.
  5. Unplug the 2 wiring harnesses.
  6. Locate the TED and unplug it. I don't have good pictures because it's hard to photograph the TED attached to the seat, behind the wiring harnesses and seat hardware. It's pretty easy to get to but hard to photograph.
  7. The TED is attached to the spring wire that holds up the seat cushion. At the blower end, squeeze the wire together and the blower portion will release easily.
  8. The shiny metal end was a little trickier to remove, but I got it out in a couple of minutes by pulling it down to unclip the clips which you can see. Then, I compressed the cushion with one hand while wiggling the metal bracket out from behind the cushion support wire with the other hand.
  9. Reassembly is the opposite. I installed the metal end first, then clipped the blower end on and plugged in the wire.
  10. Reattach the 2 main wiring harnesses.
  11. Install the 4 seat bolts.
  12. Readjust the seat and enjoy a nice warm cruise.

This is the metal bracket end. There are 2 clips that slide under the spring wire that hold up the seat cushion. This end takes a little wiggling to get it out from behind the cushion wire.

This is the back side of the blower. Notice the 2 clips. Squeeze the spring wire together and it will pop right into those clips.

Here's the finest Chinese TED Ford could find. The blower was already broken loose from the heating end when I got to it. There was no filter either.

Awesome post, abarks! I wish you tackled this before I had my dealer fix it!

Just repaired mine. Works great. Also, my wiring harness was long enough to leave it plugged in, so everybody may not need to do that. Thanks again!

Just found this thread, I have heated and cooled seats, I push the buttons and the blower turns on and off after a couple seconds. My lights stay lit though.

Would this be my problem? Like my signature says, 2012 truck.
