My 2011 does this sometimes too. No rhyme or reason to when or why but a couple times it felt like the whole tranny was gonna fall out.

Hey Blondie70 and BillK,

Please shoot me a PM with the mileage of your rigs; I'll explore options to assist.

A clunking noise or like a SLAM? I was, and still am, experiencing erratic SLAMMING into gear from park. Happens cold, happens warm, happens hot. No pattern that I can find. Dealer tried replacing solenoids without success.

I would say it's like a slam....but only did this twice and I was shifting to reverse. Shook the truck and made banging noise. Everything was normal except the slam/noise. Passengers in truck started telling me I shudda got a Toyoke or something and having a fun time making fun of Ford...haha

OK. Sounds like the issue I've had. Took it in to the dealer a number of times before warranty was up and they tried a few reflashes eventually they replaced the solenoids under tsb 11-11-11. Still slams into gear occasionally, more so during cold weather but does the 1-2 shift slam frequency enough and in all conditions. I've been tempted for a long time now to get a fluid exchange done with new mercon LV and see if symptoms abate at all, though I doubt it.

Mine hardly ever does this but when it does I can tell its about to slam based on the unusually high resistance the column shifter gives me right before I move it from park to reverse. Its a very reliable "tell". When that happens Ive found that pumping the brake pedal a few times right before shifting will return it to smooth operation and reduce or eliminate the slam.

Thanks for the info, guys. Hey johndog, what year and model truck you got ? I did not notice this hard shifting as you had.

Same SLAMMING here. 2009 5.4 fx4 has been doing this randomly since day one. I can feel the resisitance on my console shifter when going from park to reverse. I usually cringe while i pull it back then BOOOM! It almost feels like i am parked on a hill and using all my might to force the tranny to break away into a gear that it shouldnt be in. However no problems have occured that i know of. Just that sound and feel

I've had it happen in my 2011 FX4 5.0 as well. Good description of how it feels. and sounds though.
