I just traded my 12 Lariat 5.0 supercrew in for a 2010 platinum max tow f150. I had the 5.0 for 3 years, 2 of those I pulled a 6k pound camp trailer for the summers. I will tell you the 5.0 (mine had 3.55 gears) is not a good tow machine. I had 5 star tune which made the tow haul mode better but not much difference in power. Now unloaded it would wind up once it hit 3500 rpm it was a rocket. But climbing a hill at 4500rpm with trailer in toe in 2nd gear is not fun.

Haven't hitched the trailer to the platinum yet but I can tell the difference in low rpm torque. I had a 05 Lariat with 3.73 and it screamed in 2nd gear pulling a tent trailer and atv in the bed up steep hills. The 5.0 handled that much better till I got a heavier trailer. Most of that is due to the 6 speed though.

I've 5 star tuned the 5.4 with their overdrive lockout tune that blocks 6th when in tow haul since the 5.4s did not get the cool select shift option on the transmission. I don't need to go fast, I just need torque low down and the 5.0 ain't got it. I don't care what they say and talk trash, I've owned both and it is a sport truck not a tow truck.

The 5.4 and 6 speed are definitely a good combination. It really helps you use that low-mid range power of that long stroke. 5.4 parts are typically cheaper and extremely common.

I have the 5.4 in my 2010 a bought a month ago. Besides the 163,000 miles and misfire in #4 which the dealer fixed with no problems ( no 2 piece spark plugs either * dances with glee * ) it runs great now and my mpg improved too. I was at the Ford dealer a few days ago looking at paint sticks for scratches and the dealer wanted me to trade in my truck for something newer saying I'd be better off. I think someone wanted a 5.4 FX4 lol. I told him no and I owed a lot on it and they wanted to pay it off and put me in a 14, but I am happy where I am at. If I need to tow something, I know this truck can do it. So no reason for me to move into something newer. Not that it wasn't tempting at first.

I've had a few people ask me if it was worth trading their 5.4L in for a new truck. I specifically tell them "If you tow heavy, I'd go for the EcoBoost, or stick with your 5.4, especially if it's been reliable. If you tow light, your truck will do fine, unless you just want a new truck, in which case, take your pick."

Like you said, I've never had any issues; but as much as I love my 5.0, it does make its torque up higher, and if I were to tow all the time, or tow heavy, I'd trade it for an EcoBoost.

We have an Expedition and F150 both with 5.4L engines... Our Expy is at 156K and now at the shop due to engine failure... Camshaft lobes are so warn, metal is everywhere... This is with 5-20 MC and MC oil filters changed every 5K religously... No leaks or using oil ever... Not sure where we ent wrong...

My Truck at 131K is fine so far, I do like the 5.4 paired with the 6speed vs my last 04 with 5.4... BUT now I wonder if these 5.4's should be traded off after 100K.... I will definately be swapping to a full syn engine oil...

I won't buy another 5.4 going forward, although I think they were pulled in 2011 anyway...

Actually Ford pulled the 5.4 from the Expedition when they refreshed them a few years ago. The only engine option is the 1st gen eco-boost.
